SHOCKING SUICIDE.
MR. JOSEPH GREENWOOD SHOOTS HIMSELF. I ELECTIONEERING TROUBLES. (BY TELEIiItAI'H.— OWN COUItESPO.VDKST). Auckland, Last Night. Joseph (Jkeenwood, of Mount Roskill, shot himseli to-day. Mrdreenwood went out this morning with his lil tln boy into one of the back paddocks of his farm. It was a. frightful surprise. to tho lad to see his father lake tho gun which he carried at. the time and put it to his own hoad and pull the trigger. The poor lad saw his father fall but could do nothing. Ho ran away to the house of a Mr Hill, a neighhour. Mr Hill came quickly but was too lato to givo any real assistance. Mr Green wood was carried home and Dr King wan called. The doctor examined the patient, but could only pronounce him as quite dead. Mr Greenwood was well known in his own district and in Auckland, and was the last man any of his friends would have expected to do such a deed as he did to-day. He was Chairman of the Mount Roskill Road Board and of the District, Licensing Committee. At the last general election he opposed Hon. E. Mitchelson for Eden without success. It is hardly likely that his defeat at the election would effect his mind, but he is said to have been very much troubled by that defeat, financially, ho was perfectly correct, and the only maSou for the rash act seems to be his electioneering defeat.
