NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.

An adjourned meeting of the Newcastle Road Board was held on Monday 13th April, at the office of the Board. Present: Messrs Corboy (chairman), McKnight, Corbett and Bycroft. The Chairman reported that Mr Limrner wished to get the Board's permission to make a drain across a road which runs through his farm in order to drain a piece of swamp land as the best fall for the water was across the road.—Mr McKnight said the application for this drain should come to the Board in writing before it could be considered, as the Board must bo cautious if permission be given, that the drain shall not cause any future expenso to the ratepayers. He proposed that the clerk write to Mr Limmer to this effect, which the Board agreed to.—The Chairman recommended the Board to consider the advisableness of letting by contract the keeping in older of about 25 miles of the several district roads which have been already formed, or that the Board may decide upon, for a term of one year.—On the proposition of the Chairman it was resolved that the returning officer's fees be reduced to one guinea for taking a poll, and ten shillings for nominations only, and that the clerk's allowance for each adjournment be seven shillings and sixpence, to take effect from this date.—The clerk was authorised to advertise the closing f)r traffic of the road over Blackwatcr Creek Bridge whilst the new bridge is being erected. A few small accounts having been passed for payment the Board rose.
