Tin; Autumn MuiHim; uf tlm above club uua held on the Claudlands Racecourse on Saturday last aud iu every way was a grand success. During the previous night aud the morning, heavy rain fell wliicli prevented many from attending. Notwithstanding the unfavouiablcm.'ss of the wn.it.lier there was a large attendance, including His Excellency the Governor, Lord Onslow.iiiid a number of tiic ollicers from the Australian sijuadrou now in Auckland. About elcveu o'clock the rain ceased and the aflernoon was a lovely one, and many ladies came on to tho course during the afternoon. Altogether there must have been fully 800 people present during the afternoon. The excursion train from Auckland brought about 350 people, but had the weather been tine when it left Auckland that number would have been more than doubled. Lord Ouslow and party arrived at Hamilton East at 1.15 p.m. by special train which left Auckland at 9.15, running through with only one stoppage, at Mercer. Mr C. Hudson, District Tratlio Manager accompanied the party. At Hamilton East, His Excellency was met bv the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr I. Coates, and conveyed on to the course in a brake. On arriving in front of the stand, the hou. secretary of the Club, Mr G. H. Carter, welcomed His Excellency and introduced him to the Htewards, the band playing God Save the Queen. As the Hurdle race was about to start the party w.-sre conducted to the Stand, of which a certain portion had been reserved, and witnessed the race. On the conclusion of the race His Excellency was entertained at a champagne luncheon by the stewards, in a large maraiiG which had benn nrrotnd adjoining the Saddling Paddock. The luncheon was provided by Mr T. M. Hill, of Hamilton, and "reflected great credit on him as a providore. During the rest of the afternoon the vice regal parry wit nessed the racing with great interest, leaving by special train about live o'clock just after the Novel race had been run. The Governor during the interval between the races accompanied by Mr O. F. Pilling, rode round and iuspeeted the course and expressed himeclf as agreeably surprised as to the state to which the Club had brought the grounds during the short time it had been in existence. He also expressed his intention of again visiting the South Auckland meeting when able to do so. Impey's fine band arrived by the excursion train from Auckland, and during the afternoon performed in an excellent manner, doing much to fill up the intervals between the various events. Luncheon was supplied at the Grand stand aud MrLeQuesuc, of the Waikato Hotel, catered for the public at the bir, both appearing to be doing a good business. Mr H. Maliun had a refreshment booth, ai/t was well patronised. Two totalisators were worked conjointly by Messrs Adama aud Andrews, and a large amount of money (£I4SO 10s) was put through. The tickets, with the exception of those on the first race which were 10s, were £1. The dividends on the Steeplechase and Novel Race were the largest paid, being £>S '.h and £6 respectively. The various otliecs were dlieiently filled as follows :-Jml«o, Mr B. P. Bayly; Starter, Mr J, iloNicol ; Clerk of the Scales, Mi- C. J. W. Barton ; Clerks of the Course, Messrs O. F. and E. H. Pilling; Totalisator Steward, Mr G Edgccumbe. Mr G. H. Carter, the hou. secretary to the Club, exercised a general supervision, aud it is mainly due to his untiring exertions that thi , meetings of the Club have been raised to the success they undoubtedly are. Mr K. D. Halatead, the handicapper to tho Club, was present at the mcetiuc;, aud he is to be complimented upon the successful manner iu which he concealed the various winners. Owing to the heavy rain the course, which on Friday was in splendid order, was rather slippery and the going a little heavy. During the racing one or two little mishaps occurred, but there were no serious accidents to mar the day's pleasure. Only one protest was entered, that being against Mr W. Windsor, who rode Ihna, the winner of the Welter Handicap, as a gentleman rider, but it was dismissed. Eight events were set down for discussion, arid the racing throughout was of an interesting description. In all the races, except the Welter, good fields faced the starter, who was very successful in getting tho horses away. The first race was the Maiden Plate, and the winner was supplied by the two-year-old Brown Bess, who also appropriated the Klying Stakes, the last race of the day, after a good race. This double win by Mr Booth was very popular with the public, and the mare was loudly cheered on both occasions. Cloth of Cold won the Hurdles with great ease. Leoriua, in a field of eight, wou the Autumn Handicap and the Claudelands Plate somewhat easily, the place 3 on both occasious being filled by Haricot and Try Fluke in that order. Only three faced tho starter for the Welter, which was won by lima. The Steeplechase proved one of the best races ever run in Waikato, and Mr Windsor's Yum Yum secured a popular victory from Blue Peter, Justice being third. Lord Onslow beiug greatly taken by the performance of Yum Yum, her owner, Mr Windsor, was introduced by the Hon. John Bryce, Member for Waikato, to His Excellency, who complimented him on being the owner of such a splendid marc, aud said that he and the people of Waikato should be proud of possessing such a horse. Old Pretender, well known in days gone by, came out of his shell and won the Novel iu good style. The following is a detailed account of the racing : —
