Hll.l.s' CoMI'K.NSATIoX. — After considerable discussion in committee: on tliis question, (Jr. Johnson proposed that the Council offer the Messrs lii 11 llros. i'.KI, including the fence erected hy the settlers, as compensation in full fur the value of flic land taken from his pro pei ty for the Matahuni raid. —.Seconded by (jr. Seddon.— O. Forrest moved that C 25 lie offered as full compensation.— Seconded by Cr. Coates.—On lieiui; put, the amendment was lost, the voting lining For : Civs. ' loates and I'orrest; naaiust: Primrose, Seddon and Johnson,—Oil thu motion beinc; put, it was carried, the voting being vice v?.rsa. —-With reference to the fence erected hy the settlers at this place, the Engineer reported that ihe fence was not well erected, and he was afraid that it iniphl not be coiif-idercd a legal fence.—Cr. Johnson said he had seen the settlers on this question, aud they agreed to do the fence as he indicated.—Cr. Johnson was instructed to incur half the cost of l.vo eates, to be erected on the road, on behalf of the Council.
Locke's Hill Di.viatton'.—The necessary steps for taking this laud were authorised, there being no opposition. Presiding Officers.—Mr W. Birss, Raugiriri district, Mr James McPhersou, Kirikiriroa, aud Mr A. Edwards, Tainahere, were appointed presiding olficors for taking the local option poll, which will be taken at Kangiriri on May '2nd, Kirikiriroa ou May 4th, aud Tamahcre ou May Ist. -MATAiil'liA.—Cr Johnson report-id with reference to the road applied for by Mr Hubbard at last meeting, that the cost would be about Jt was decided that the funds would not allow of the work beint: gone ou with at present.— The following tenders were received for repairs to the Matahura road from Huntly : Clearing, &c., 13 swamp.;, W.
