RAGLAN

District School. —The Raglan District School closed on Thursday for the Easter holidays. For the next six months the school will be under the care of a lady teacher, our respected teacher (Mr La Trobe) having obtained six months leave of absence in order to visit his father, the Rev. James La Trobe, Bishop of the Moravian Church, who resides at Bristol, and who is now 88 years of age. It is 39 years since Mr La Trobe left England, arriving in Australia to meet his uncle, who at that time was superintendent of Victoria, then a part of New South Wales. After staying there a couple of years—some part of it on the goldfields — Mr La Trobe came over to New Zealand in 1854, and nearly all the time since then has resided in the Raglan district. It is over twenty years since he entered the public service as school teacher, a great portion of that time being so occupied in this district, though he has held school appointments at the Thames. Whatawhata and other places, and has had, at various times, valuable testimonials presented to him in recognition of his services, and it can be truly said, either as a settler, teacher, or in any public capacity, Mr La Trobe has always earned for himself the highest respect and esteem of his fellow settlers, and everyone desires him a safe and pleasant voyage home and return to his family here again.

Birthday party.-On Friday, the 13th. a large party assembled at the the Public Hall to celebrate the coming of age of Mr Walter Moon, eldest son of Mr George Moon, of the Harbour View Hotel, Raglan, about sixty settlers meeting to celebrate the event. An excellent supper was provided, and the health of Mr Moon was duly proposed by Mr Jerome, and received with full honours, to which Mr Moon suitably replied. Dancing was kept up till early next morning.
