ONE OF THE WORLD'S WONDERS
C.U'I'.UN WII.I.IAM Jackson Kauky IS now on a lecturing toui in liii- di.-.ti ict. I'he captain can, iu all probability, claim to be the oldest colonist now living, it being now sixty-two years since lie li'.'.st landed in Australia. He will deliver the first of his liiterestiUL' lectures on " 1 he l',avlv Hay of the. Colonies and the Men ii| the Tim sin the Public Hall, Cainbnd"', on Thursday evening u-xt, wucu -V. (.iem'ntJ F. M ., will take the chair. Captain Harry in the author of three volume* —' 1 I'he 11 ist ii y New South Wak-v' ''Tlm I'op'dar Worn Up ami Down-," and " The Australian Colonies and Mtn and Women ol the i riles.
Although Capt lin Bury it. s-jvenly-twu years ol age, he is as hide and hearty a* many a man .it forty, and he is sanguine .jf being able to shortly aunouuee the successful opening up of a valuable industry in our district, in the shape of a valuable deposit of tin "re, which lie came across some years ago. Ciptain Bury, in his own words, was at the " settling ot three colonies ' —Melbourne in 1.53.~>, New Zealand in 1537, and Port I'js.iington, New South \\ ales, in IS.I'J. He was the first white man to tike William Buckley by the hand, the " wild white man " who had lived with the Australian blacks for »2 years, and had lust his motliei's tongue. In 1*37. the captain was living amongst the natives in New Zealand, at which period cannibalism w.is rife amongst them. With such c;-, tended experiences and in the hands ot such an ent rtrtaininjj and ori"iual lecturer as the captain is reduced to be, his lectures v. ill be well worth hearing. He is -lot an every day man but an extraordinary character wlio.-ic name will live ill tli'j history of Ni-w South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand. On his recent trip to Kuglaud he lectured on 121 platforms with great succ ;-n. H t crowd..d Kxeter Hall, Loudon, twice. 11l his »ix yea:tour the Australian colonies lie li is lill j.l »\ith appreciative audiences the I'rotestiut Hall, Sydney, and the great Town Hall Melbourne, and all the Co .einors of the various colonies have patronised his lectures. After the delivery of his lectures in Waikato he will proceed to the King Country in order to complete the negotiations in connection with securing concessions over the land upon which he has ascertained that a valuable deposit of tin ore exist*. We have seen specimens of this ore now in the possession of Captain Barry, and without being able to form any opinion of its value, it is undoubtedly highly mineralised, and if he can "lay us on to a mountain of it'' as lie says, it would be a great boon to this part of New Zealand, judging from the immense value of a similar deposit at Mount Bishop iu Tasmania, which lias already yielded to the fortunate shareholders *omethinu approaching two millions of money. The Captain begins his course of lectures at Cambridge ou Thursday next, April 2nd, Hamilton on Friday April 3rd, Te Awnmutu on Monday April fjth, and Kihikihi on Tuesday April 7th. We recommend our readers to go and hear this remarkable man, remarkable he must be, to have come safely through such chequered and eventful times. Those who have road his popu lar book have some irk*a of the various ups and downs in life to which he has been subject, and through which he has safely passed. We trust that his last venture, obtaining the land upon which lit. discovered the tin ore, may In- safely negotiated, and that it will enable him to retire from public life upon a satisfactory competency.
