ALEXANDRA.
Tin-; Maori King.—Tawhiao, the Maori King, with aoine fifty followers arrived at his settlement at Whatiwhatihoe on Saturday last:, where about 250 natives were assembled to greet him. On crossing the bridge the tiring of guns commenced, and it was kept up till his arrival at the runanga house where the usual tangi took place. Quite an elaborate dinner was prepared for him in the European style, but the old gentleman preferred to eat iu his owu way, and had his portion brought out to him iu a dish, which he partook of on the ground outside the house, where as he remarked : " he could see his people moving about." The object of Tawhiao's visit is said to be to induce the people of Whatiwhatihoe to leave the place and reside with him at his new settlement at Pukekawa, and also to remove the bones of his father, tho™ of his son aud other remains. On the 26th a feast will take place, with horse-racing and other sports. Business Imi'l'.oving.—Business in the township has somewhat improved of late, and our storekeepers are looking quite cheerful.
