WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Y/aikato County Council was he'd in the Council Chambers. Hamilton I'iisl, at : >0 p.m., yesterday. There were, preseni : Primrose (chairman), Smlil-n, l'...nwh, Johnson, Forrest, and Coates. Mr T. I!-. Sandcs, the County liugineer, was also in attendance. RkphijsoNTATlVl:. —The Returning (liiicer reported that Mr 11. J. Kallendar had been elected unopposed as representative fur tho Cambridge Riding, in which a vacancy had occurred. Waikangi-Taniwiia lvOAO.—Tho Chairman reported that with Cr. t'urreit, the Clerk, and Engineer, ho had visited Wairangi. At the Wairangi Station they were mot by Cr Johnson and MrMcK ie, the manager of the Taniwha Estate, who.se hospitality they enjoyed during tho visit. They made a close inspection of tho road, and'all cairn to the conclusion that there was only one road that could be made, and this was not the one agitated for by Mr Filling, when manager of tho Taniwha Estate, but the ono always advocated by Cr. Johnson. The road was laid out by the Government in selling tho land, and as yet, was not in tho charge of the country. Dr. Tieinarne would grant any land that would be required for a deviation froir. this line of road where necessary. This road would bo a level ono. They instructed the Engineer to prepare plans and call for tenders for the road through tho bush, and as the tenders were duo to-day, they would show how much 11101 e money would bo requited, as after this work was done little more money would I e needed to make tho road passable. W.iiraiUH and Matnliura.— Cr. .b-huson slid 'hero was no doubt that this was the best road for the di.-.trict, as it would gi'.e acee.ss ti. two settlors, as well as the settlers on the Tauiwh.i Estate, who have been agitating lore, road for some time, and this was the only road that could be made available for them. Mr Mcßae said that after the Councillors left several settlers came to him and suggested that there should havo been a deviation by which about three-quarters of a mill! would bo saved. Cr. Johnson said that he was not in sympathy with the deviation, as it means taking land under the Public Works Act and aNo that the owner of tho property, Mr Muir, had su idea that tho Council wished to oppress him by taking tho road through his land. ?ilo doubt the deviation would shorten the road, but if it was to be any exoen-e to the riding ho would oppose it. The Engineer said that Mr Muir was not tho owner of tho property but Mr Swanson, whom he had seen, and win war. agreeable to the Council taking tho deviation through his property without compensation as long as the, road's throueh his property were properly defined. The tenders for the bush portion of this load weie then opened and dealt with as follows : — Bernard Murray, £100 Os 5d ; J. Hunter and Co., informal; E. Wilson, .f'.tj 18s Sd ;P. Ilice. £10:3 Bs. Tho Engineer's estimate was £1.00. Having gone into tho tenders fully, the Iviginoer re-
ported that Wilson's tender was tho lowest mi the schedule prices, and it was accordingly accepted, Mr Mell-ie agreeing to pay the whnlo est of tin outfall drain.

The Clerk acknowledged the receipt of the. claim, and was instructed to reply objecting to tho claim as exccs-ive. ifuN'n.Y. — Four ratepayers at Ifuntly wrote pointing out tho danger to ttio health of tho inhabitants from the stagnant water
lying during tho summer, ami offering to contribute half the cost of putting in a a drain to remove the water.—Or. Johnson thought that it was outside, the province of the Council to deal with. —Cr. Seddon said that there was no doubt that the Council was the. Board of Health, and responsible fur the health of the district.—On the motion of Cr. Forrest seconded by Cr. Seddon, Mr
T. G. Sandos was appointed Inspector of Nuisances under the Public Health Act, and was instructed to report on this matter at next meeting. Mr Sandos said that he had inspected this place. A township had been formed near this swamp, and the people had been emptying their waterclosets. etc., at the back of their premises, and now that typhoid fever had broken out they were suprised and wanted the Council to drain this property. He explained to these people that Airs Schlinker and the Waikato Steam Navigation Company who had sold tho land were the proper persons to ieal with draining this properly. Matatiuka.—Mr Storey reported that tho settlers had finished the fencing along the road through Messrs Hill's property.
Great South Road.—Mr Birss called the attention of the Council to the furze encroaching on this road, and now sheep and cattle were being driven along this road travellers had considerable trouble to get along tho road. Tho owners of the pre,parties from which tho furze had spread having received proper notice from the Council the clerk was instructed to ta're iiroce'lings against them. Ext.ixrkk's Kkpobt.—'The engineer reported that Messrs Hubbard and Milne had completed the bridge over the Mat iimra creek. Of thirteen swamps on the Matahura road eleven require immediate attention. Mr G. Hill, junr., also drew attention to the bad state of this road.— It was resolved that tenders bo called for this work.
Licknsincj Committer.—A petition was received asking that a polling place for the election of the Licen:.ing Committee tie appointed at Hnntlv.—The matter was left in the hand:; of the Returning Officer.
