SALES BY AUCTION.

We are glad to dee that the Hamilton Borough Council has decided not to have the bi-mouthly sales in the Dorongh Yards, us was suggested at the January meeting. The auctioneers were communicated with on the subject, and in reply Messrs McXieol and Co., said that it would not bo a. wise step, as it would make two small sales, with a small attendance of buyers and sellers, instead of the ono Rood sale now held, and which is increasing each month. There is no doubt that there are too many sales held throughout the district, and wo still hold to the opinion that we have so often expressed, that it would be much better for both the farmers and auctioneers if the sales were held less often and both the auctioneers sell on the same day. One sale a month at Ohaupo, Waitoa, Cambridge and Hamilton, with an occasional sale in the out districts, would be far butter for all concerned than the number of sales now held, often with a very small attendance. This question of holding fortnightly sides arose from a request from Mr W. J. Hunter, that the yards be enlarged, but in Messrs McXieol and Co. pointed out sulhcicnt accommodation to meet thu requireir.unts for some time to ooirio, can be provided by dividing thu larger pens, ino (Inuncil aru fully alive to thu importance to which the Hamilton tales aru growiug, and v.'u feol suru the Kaleyards will shortly have their attention. One of tho things most needed is a covered shed with a good passage through, where horse sales may be held, as great inconvenience is suffered at the horse sales when tho day happens to be wet. Uliaupo will coiitinuo to hold its place for cattle sains, but there can be no denying thu fact that tin; boive sales held in Hamilton havo buwi the most successful of iiny in tho district, and points to it holding the premier portion f" ,, '''■'-" •"'l^.
