PROPOSED EXTENSION OF HOSPITAL BUILDINGS.

TO THE KDH'OII,

y IU —Great dissatisfaction seems to oxist throughout the district at the proposal to erect a rp?idonco for :i doctor :tt the lln*pital, as it is considered quite unnecessary. A resident doctor is not required, us the present working of the establishment clearly proves. If the Board go in for a resident doctor who will have todevotehis whole time to the Hospital they will Imvo to pay a much higher salary than at present, and surely no one will agree that -0 patients require the whole attention of a doctor. Threo hundred pounds a yenr without residence has answered well so far, and uo complaints have been raised or heard of which would lead the public to believe that the present system is unsatisfactory. If this is so why go in for an unnecessary luxury. Build an additional win? to the Hospital if it is required by all means, and let the nurses have the use of the old building as their quarters, for they certainly require better accommodation than they have hitherto possessed ; but why in tho name of common sense put up an expensive building which is certain not to bo required for years to come. The argument that the •' residence " should be built now because half the cost would come from subsidies, reminds me of a uian who goes to auction and purchases an article not because he wants it but " because it is so cheap." Remember also that a doctor for the hospital alone would mean £-101) or i'-100 per annum. It is to be hoped that the members of the Board will look well before they leap aud gho the matter their best consideration, It means extra taxation to all ratepayers, which they can ill afford.—Yours, iVe. K.O.vomy.
