THE LATE DROWNING AT CAMBRIDGE.

TO THE KDITOU. Sir,—ln reply to your Cambridge correspondent Lβ to-day's issue ns to "what is to bo done with the poor creatures that cannot refrain from taking too much drink?" I think the remedy lies with the police. The law, I think, provides that publicans who serve drunken men render themselves liable to prosecution, and if the police were to follow this up it would do much to prevent the hateful sights we often see, to say nothing of the many accidents, the resjlt of insanity caused by excessive drinking. I know it is very hard in places like Hamilton and Cambridge, where there are too many hotels to

obtain a conviction against publicans, as the men go from one house to another, and the reduction in the number of houses is urgently required. Were this done the police would be able to oxercise better supervision over the remaining hotels, and tho publicans themselves would be in such a position as not to have to descend to many of the practices they now do to get a living, the small trade being so split up. 1 rusting I have not trespassed too far on your spaeo. —I am, yours eto, ( Tkmpkraxck.
