A MAN named Walter Luckman, aged about 54. was found dead in the garden at the back of the National Hotel, Cambridge, this morning, Luckman had been in Waikato since ISII3, and was well-known. Of late years he has given way to drink, and for the past two months lie has been in a continual state of semi-intoxication. In August last he was sent to Mount Kden for two months, the charge being that he had no visible means of support, but really it was to put hi in in a place where he would receive medical treatment, and be unable to procure intoxicants. After he had served the term he returned to Cambridge, ana shortly after received a remittance from ins brother stated to be about 1200. Since then he has spent nearly the whole of the time at one or other of the hotels, gradually getting worse, and this morning he was found lying dead, as stated above, in the garden of the National Hotel with his head and shoulders in a hole ot filth that was used as a dram to the pig sty. The inquest was held at the National Hotel, Cambridge, at 4 p.m. to-day. J. H. Priestly, Esq., J. P., acted as coroner, the jurv being, Messrs C. Tuck (foreman), .. S Masters, T. Marshall, J. Webber, W. Moisley, and W. Underwood. The jury viewed the body, which was lying in a shed and presented a horrible spectacle. After hearing the evidence of Arthur Bach (who found the body). Dr. Cushney, and Constable lirennan, the jury returned a verdict ot "accidental death," and expressed the opinion that the hole in which deceased was found should bo covered, so as to prevent similar accidents in future.
