RAGLAN ANNUAL SPORTS.

This anunal sports, which should havo been held on New Year's Day, but in consequence of the unsettled of the weather were postponed until I' riday, the Kith inst., took place on that date, and a good number of settlers, along with visitors, were present during the day. It was lino throughout-, with the exception of two or three passing showers, though a nold southerly gale was blowing all day. This might be said to have been the event of tho day, and created great interest throughout the race.

7'i'g or YV'aii, Maori v Pakelia, prize i' 2. —The rope having boen stretched, both the natives and Europeans contesting took their places, and exerted their utmost efforts to draw over their opponents, the pakeha proving iu both heats (after a very gallant effort on tho part of the Maoris) tho victors. Tho result was received with great chetrincr. AQVATIO sroias. Canoe Race.—lst prize ill, L. Johnstone's crew ; lind prizo 10-, Huii. This race caused great excitement and \va? watched liy tho spectators with event iuterest. The first canoe won easily, The uocond and third canoe made aeallant race, luit the ouo man canoe, llori, at last got, the lead and came in necond. itHKAsY Buom. At its end was placed a small Hag, which had to bu brought ashore. Again and again did each one seeking the prize slip into the waters below, to tho amusement of tho .spectators. L. Johnston at last secured the prize. Everything passed off well, and tho various events were well competed for, and those taking part in tho races doing their utmost te secure the prizes. Tho annual sports ball took place in the evening, being held in the Public Hall, ll iglan, a good number of those present dating the day staying behind to attend, and dancing was kept up until the early morn.
