(BY TEL EliKAPll. —OWN CORRESPONDENT) Auckland, Last Night. Mark Ra wi.inos was charged at the Police Court to-day upon several charges if misappropriation of church funds. In his opening address tlie Crown I lo.secutoi shewed that the deficiencies commenced about the year I.SS4. There were varied trusts with the Orphan Home, to which institution the accused hud been treasurer for some time past. The Home had various sources of revcinio principally interest from mortgages, subscriptions, money paid iu by friends, and interest on deposits in the Industrial Building Society. There was also a charge against the accused of having misapplied cheques Riven lnm to pay for certain Roods, also a, charge of aiterinccheques with intent to dpfraud, A still further clmrcre was laid in respect of soino Havings bank accounts. Children working out of the Home paid in a portion of their wa ( *es 011 the understanding that accused would place it to their account at, the Bank, but this had not been done. Hie matter was brought before the Board by the gardener at tho Home asking for his wages, he had not received any for two years, Rawlings told him that if he did not want the money he might an well leave it with tho Board and receive interest on it. This lie did for two years. At length he asked Mr I for his money. With regard to the Savings Bank accounts it is understood there is a deficiency of some £200. Rawlings was committed for trial on tho first charge. The hearing of tho others will bo continued to-morrow. Two further charges are to be laid against Rawlings in respect to the bank accounts of children attached to tho Home who paid in a portion of their wages on the understanding that accused placed it to their credit, but this had not been done. kuv. lings acted as honorary treasurer for many years. So far as can he ascertained, tho deficiency is 3t1,300 or £1,-100. The yacht filaritana is reported safe eiuhty miles from Wellington. Somo 34 lots wore disposed of, at from i!2S to £82 per acre.
