CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Thk above body met on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Present : The Mayor (J. H. Priestly Ksq.), Councillors Hallv, Webber, Young. Kirkwood, Bond, Bach, Robertson and Roberts. The minutes of the last ordinary and special meeting were read and confirmed. The Foreshore. —Mr J. S. Browne, manager of the Waikato Timber Company, wrote on December 20th : I note your Council's unwillingness to accept a lower rental than £15 per annum in consequence of the great expense incurred by our heavy traffic on the hill leading to the foreshore. The connection is not quite apparent. It we landed our drive higher up the river, the traffic on the hill would be tho same as at present, though possibly a good deal less, as orr Cambridge business is rapidly approaching " vanishing points." On referring to last returns to hand from our Cambridge agent ; 1 note that our total sales from Cambridge stock for November last were 200 posts and -1J strainers, say four loads for a good waggon. Considering the present state and future prospects of our Cambridgo business, I submit that £10 per annum would be a fair rental. —The Council did not see its way to lower the ran', and the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Browne to that effect.
ThkUaso. —Mr J. R. Lamb wrote : In accordanco with your request I forward you a list of the names of tho youths to take up the instruments, also the names of my sureties. Hoping it will meet with your approbation, I am, etc., J. R. Lainb. — Me srs Gemtnell and H. Bei! are willing to be responsible with myself for the safe keeping of tlie instruments. List of members : W. Madigan, H. McKernon, A. McKinnon, F. Plesoher, A. McKearnojr. F. Armer, W. Pierce, H. Stewart, H. Bell, E. Stewart and S. R. Lamb. Boys: Webber, 0. Stewart, W. Gleuny and F. Arnold.—Mr Kirkwond doubted if one of the sureties would sign tho necessary document?. —After some discussion, it was, on the motion of Or. Bond, seconded by Or. Bach, resolved to grant Mr Lamb the use of the instruments free of chargc.
Doas.—Mr G. Collins, dog registrar wrote: '' When I gave my tender for aog registration at Is per collar, I assumed that the fees would be as; formerly ss; seeing, however, they are now made 5s and 10s, which will lessen tho number of dogs registered to a very large amount, I havo to ask you to amend my tender to 20 per cent, on the amount realised. Trusting you will kindly comply with my request." The Mayor thought the request a reasonable onej and it was decided to grant it.— It was mentioned that some individuals had been bragging thai; they intended selling their dogs to persons residing in other districts and that when they had been registered, they would buy them back again. The registrar will be asked to report any such cases, and proceedings will at once be instituted against any one so offending, as it is against tho spirit of tiie Act.

WoilKH. —Tho works committee reported the surfaceman had been employed 16i days, 12.f of which had been at the new well near the National hotel. The balance of his time had been spent at the sale yards and on necessary repairs on the streets. The well is now complete, and has cost £32 13s 4d, which is more than was anticipated, but the committee are of opinion that it has been judiciously expended, and that it will prove a great boon to the goneral public. —The report was adopted. Bad Fencing.—The Mayor said in consequence of a local he saw in that morning's Waikato Times, ho had been and inspected the fencing near the bridges, and he found that 23 rails and several posts ware required. He supposed tho surfaceman had better execute the necessary repairs.—Cr. Webber stated that the surfaceman complained that as soon as they were erected someone took them down again.— C'-. Kirkwood said he passed the place twice a day, and he knew that no one took thorn down, the fact was the fence was a bad one, the posts and rails were both had, and as soon as a cow touched it down it went. If there was to be a fence there let the council put up a good four-rail fence, and not a two-penny-half-penny two-rail one suuli au now existed. —As this will be a matter of considerable expense, it was decided to hold a special meeting on Thursday evening next to decide what shall be done; the works committee in the meantime to eo thoroughly into the matter and ascertain the be*t soit of fence to erect, and tl'jo probable cost. Gormn.—Jil- was resolved to notify Mr W. H inter chit if ho not clear the streets, opposite tho property occupied by him in JJryce-strefit, of furze within one week, that legal proceedings will be taken to compel him to do so.
