TE AWAMUTU PUBLIC LIBRARY AND READING ROOM.

Til!-; annual general meeting of subscribers was held in the reading room, on Wednesday Sth inst., Mr Jas Walton being voted to the chair. After the usual preliminary business the committee's report and balance sheet for the year IS9O was read as follows: —" Report for the year 18!)0.—Your committee have plea-aire in submitting their report and balauee-.-ln'.et for the past 12 months, showing the library to be at the present tim°, in a prosperous condition. Tho number of subscribers during the past year has been lit) as compared wiih 21 during the previous year. The number of works issued during the year has been 1902 as compared with 503 during the previous year. The total subscriptions received during tho year amounted to £22 Ss Sd as compared with £S 10s during the previous year. The total receipts from all sources during tho year amounted to £42 17 2d, and total expenditure £30 7s (id, leaving a credit balance on ;Ust December of £12 9s Sd (to which might bo added £1 outstanding subscription that has since been paid). During the past few months the reading room has been opened and supplied with most of the principal newspapers and magazines, chess, draughts; etc., and your committee are pleased to see it becoming popular and much frequented by members, and are satisfied that it has been the moans of Inrfeolv increasing tho number of subscriber's "to the library. Other requirements having been so many, and such a large number of new books having been placed upon the library shelves during ISS'J, your committee have not thought it advisable to purchase largely during the past year. A few old incomplete and worn out yellowbacks have been disposed of and these have been replaced by a few recent popular works. The total number of works now on the shelves or in circulation is 747. Your committee desire to thank all who have assisted in placing tho library on a better footing than it has before occupied, and trust that it may long continue to retain the popularity and support that it now enjoys.—For the cemmitte.—J. Balance-sheet i-oh the Year 1590.— Du.: Cash balance iu hand on 31st December, 1889, £2 13s; members'subscriptions received during year, £22 Ss 8d ; donations received during year, £4; members deposits, 10s; rent of meeting room, £2; proceeds of entertainment, £S ; sales of magazines, papers, etc., £3 5s (id. T«tal receipts, £42 17s 2d.—Ck. : Furnishing repaiis, £10 9s 4d ; librarian's salary, £9 13s Id ; magazines and papers, £4 2s Gd; cleaning and lighting, £1 17s (id ; stationery, stamps, etc., £1 Ss 9I ; purchase of hooks, £13s 4d ; insurance, £1 3s; deposits refunded, 10s. Total payments, £30 7s Bd. Credit balance on 31st December, IS9O, £12 9s Sd. Examined and found correct (signed) J. Walton and G. Burgess, auditors." The report and balance sheet were cansidered very highly satisfactory, and on the motion of Mr Walton, seconded by Mr Rees, wero unanimously adopted. Resolved that the committee fjr the ensuing 12 months consist of 7 members, and Messrs Andrew, Burgess, Cox, Mandeno, Millar, Rees, and Vause were elected. On tho motion of Mr Jas. Mandeno, seconded by Air Andrew, and supported by several other members, a hearty vote of thanks to Air A r ause for his efficient services as chairman during the past years, was cairied unanimously. Messrs A'uier and Walton wore reappointed auditor* for the ensuing year, and a vote of thanks to the chairman concluded tho meeting. At a meeting of the new committee, held immediately afterwards, Air Vause was unanimously re-elected chairman and secretary for the ensuing 12 months. Several'lmprovements have recently been made to the library and reading room. Aliss H. Chalmers has been appointed librarian. The library is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons and evenings, and the reading-room is open every afternoon and evening. The committee hope shortly to make still further improvements to the building, by the erection of a porch or verandah, re-painting, etc.
