The skull - was surreptitiously removed before , the police arrived on the scone. A number of companies, including the British and Now Zealand Fire and Accident Insurance Company, d were to-day fined i' 7 each and costs - for carrying on business in uurogist tered offices. 1 December 24. f The editor of a newspaper published at Bourke has been removed from the - local magistracy in consequence of a publishing an article reflecting in strong terms on the private character of H.E.H. the Prince of Wales. 5 The Government have decided to j prohibit far twelve months the impori tation of New Zealand pelts, owing to . the alleged prevalence of scab among i flocks in the latter colony. An attempt which was made recently to form a grand council of miners in Australia has resulted in a failure. Melbouhxk, December 24., During the last few days the police have been making' raids on thieves . and vagabonds, of which there are i at present an exceptionally large number in the city. I Last night three men were arrested for breaking and entering a jeweller's | shop and stealing jewellery to the value of £700. The arrest was not effected without a desperate resistance on the 2>art of the men, and in the fray two detectives were wounded. Adelaide, December 23. In the House of Assembly last night, Dr. Cockburn's motion with reference to the imposition of a progressive land-tax was lost by 20 to 22. The Government voted against the motion.. The cricket match between Now South Wales and South Australia was won by the visitors by six wickets. New South Wales made 406 in the first innings, and South Australia 432 in both innings. In the second innings New South Wales required VI to win, and these were secured at the cost of four wickets. December 24. The Murray River Commissioners have presented their report. They state they were unable to make the slightest advance towards settlement, the riparian rights of New South Wales having proved a stumbling block, They recommend a conference on the matter. Brisbane, December 24. Warning has been issued to the shipping to expect bad weather from west and south-west to south-west and south between Gavo Island, Hobart and the Bluff.. Peiitii, December 24. Sir Thomas Campbell has been appointed president of the Upper House. Mr John Horrcst has been entrusted with the formation of the first ministry under the constitution.
