TE AROHA ELECTORATE
Otiß OiiinEinuri correspondent writes as follows The retirement of xMr It. V. Stewart from the clt'ct.oriil contcst lia.s caused a largo number of electors to «ivo their allegiance to Mr W. S. Allen, wlsow election now appears to bo absolutely certain. The votes at tlio Kufci Kati end of this district, and those at Waihi also, were almost bound to support Mr Slowart, who indeed has done yeoman's service to those districts. Now, however, that ho has; retired, they are of course free to choose, and T understand that they have almost unanimously agreed to support Mr Allen. At l'arawai opinion la about fairly divided ; also at Puriri and Hikutain. At Paoroa Mr Allen will get a majority; also at Tairua and Turua, at which latter place he will get a block vote. In retiring from the content for tho Te Aroha seat Mr Vcsey Stewart publishes his thanks to the electors, stating his preference. for Mr Allen, whom he desires tho electors to support. Mr E. Y. Cox writes from To Aroha : — Strong committees are working in nearly every polling district, and wo feel sure of success. A report has been circulated that V. Steivart has been bought out in Mr Allen's interest, there is no foundation for this statement, and I beg to contradict it most positively.

'• disreputable election - KKRIN(i TACTICS." (lIV TEf.EGKAL'H— OWN COI!III".SPON'Di;.N'T). Auckland, Last Night. Hun. E. Mitchelson and Mr Kwingtcin publish (in affidavit relative to the latter which Mr Desinoud read at Mr Adam Porter's meeting last night. Mr Mitchelunn declares that hi: never wrote nor signed nor saw such a letter, nor any other letter of a similar kind. Mr Ewington declares that lie never saw, heard of nor received the letter referred to by Mr Desmond, nor any letter of a similar kind. Mr Mitebelson adds a note stating that ho will retire from Kden if anyone can prove that he lias had any communication directly or indirectly on electoral matters with the Employer's Association. Major (leorsfe also writes emphatically denying Mr Desmond'** statements regarding the Globo Assets Company. Dr. Laishley also shews he had not had any connection with the l'atetere Com|i i||y since 1.S&1 lis not u .shareholder in tho Bank of New Zealand nor docs ho liunk thmv.
The "Star " in a scathing article under Ihe heading " Disrepniauie Iv'eetioneering Tactics," severely attacks Desmond anJ says it is now for Desmond to satisfy tho public that he is tho victim and not the author of the imposture which has been attempted. A still more awkward task is set him by Adam Ivelly, of the anti-Poverty Society, in a letter published in the Star in which ho charges Desmond with barefaced literary piracy in his paper on "Christ as a Social Reformer," which he has foisted on the public as his own. The issue of the Twentieth Century dated Xew _ York, April U7th, containing Van Densen'a paper, from which tho extracts were made, has been shown ns by Mr Kellv, and there can be 110 mistake about their genuineness. Headers may institute a comparison with Desmond's effusion for themselves, We leave that gentleman to wriggle out of tho dilemma as best he may.
