HEAVY RAINFALL.

Wellington', Last Night. 1'"or more than an hour rain poured down at midday with tropical violence, accompanied by a viotent burnt of a northerly Rale. In Hill-stretit the water came down in torrents, temporarily Hooding the road way. The Government Buildings were surrounded, and most of the reclaimed land was , under water. In the lnw-lying part of the Lambton Quay, considerable damage was done. Several shops hud water in their, nearly two feet deep. Worth and Stroullur, furniture warehouse; Hippler, grocer, and Warnock and Kelly, drapers, all suffered largely. The water in the Kaiwarra stream was backed up by a culvert on the W3llin(?tonManawatu iine, and washed away several lengths of rails, with a portion of the powder magazine. Goods traffic was blocked, but passengers were carried as usual. In the afternoon the weather largely cleared up, and is now line.
