PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

Statutory Meeting

Thb annual meeting of the above body was held in the Council Chambers, at Cambridge) on Wednesday, at noon. The Clerk occupied the cnair, and read the names of thoße elected to represent the various ridings. There was a full attendance, their being present: Crs W,. P. Chepmell, J. Horrell and M. Harrison (Waitoa), E. W. Hanmer, W. H. Hemes (Te Aroha), A. Heaney, J. S. Browne (Patetere), J. Bailey (Taotaorea), and N. I. Hunt (Matamata). Chairman.—Cr, Heaney said Cr. W. P. Chepmell had done his duties in the chair so well during the past three years that he was sure they could not do better than re-elect hiin. He moved that Cr. Chepmell be chairman lor the ensuing year.—Seconded by Cr. Hanmer and carried unanimously.— Having taken the chair, Cr. Chepmell briefly thanked the Council for the honour, and said he would endeavour to do his duty in the future as in the past.

Hospital Board.—The following were elected to represent th 3 Council on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board during the forthcoming year:—Crs. Chepmell, Hanmer, Heaney and Browne. The annual uieoting then closed.

Ordinary Meeting. The ordinary monthly meeting was then held, tho same councillors being presont. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting wore read and confirmed. Undedioatkd Roads. — Cr. Hunt, manager of the Matamata estate, submitted a letter from the proprietors of it, in which they agreed to dedicate that portion^of the Cambridge-Taurauga Road where it runs through their land at Hinuera, provided the Council bore the legal expenses therewith.—lt was resolved that the proprietors be informed that a deed will be submitted to them for signature, without their incurring further costs.—The Clerk said tho Survey Department were taking steps to dedicate that portion of this road that runs through Native lands. Oxford-Matamata Road.—Cr. Bailey referred to Air James Hume's application to have tho above road altered whero it runs through his property, near Oxfjrd; and said if Mr Hume would pay the legal expenses connected with the matter, he thought tho Council should make the alteration as it would straighten and improve the road.—lt was moved by Cr Heaney, seconded by Cr Hanmer : That the cost of the proposed deviation be ascertained, and that Mr Hume be asked whether lie is willing to pay the cost of closing the existing road, and to what extent he will contribute towards the cost of making and dedicating the proposed new road. —The Chairman did not see his way to support the motion, and moved an amendment to the effect that Mr Hume bo asked to bear the whole cost of the proposed alteration?. —This was seconded by Cr. Horrell pro forma, but upou i!.s being put, only the mover voted for it.-Xho motion was then put and carriod. Rates OX Native Lands —It was resolved to pay forthwith tho sum of £30 13s Id to the Waitoa Koid Board, that amount having been received for rates on nativo lands within the Waitoa Riding. A Much Needed Culvert.—'The Railway Engineer {Mr Coom) wrote that he had instructed a culvert to bo put under tho railway line between Te Avoha and Waihou at the site recommended by tho Council. Enginkkh'h Kki'Okt.—Mr Sandes' reported that the works on the MatamataOxford road were progressing favourably, and suggested that {acacia troes should bo planted in a gully to prevent its getting larger.—Received. Extension ok Time Wanted. —Air G. Walker applied for an extension of one month m which to complete his contract on the Oxford-Matamata road.—Cr. Bailey objected to the application being granted, and said that the contractor had taken a number of men off that contract to work on Isaac's road, or it would have been finished within the stipulated time. —It was agreed to grant an extension of a ..fortnight and to inform the contractor that the penalties will be enforced if the work it not completed hy that time. The Waiorongomai Tramway.—Mr 1. Pavitt reported on tho above tramway, and pointed out numerous repairs that were urgently lequired to the line and buildings. It was decided to send a copy of tho engineer's report to the acting-manager of the Te Aroha Gold and Silver Mining Company at Te Aroha, directing him to have the noccssary repairs executed at once.—Cr. Herries thought the tools should aUu be inspected.—The Engineer was directed to inspect the tools included in the inventory, and report to the Council at next meeting.—Mr J. H. Emett wrote, offering £1 for a quantity of old wire rope that now lies on the side of the tramway.—The offer was not accepted, and the engineer was instructed to asceitain, when inspecting the tools, what property there is about the tramway belonging to the Council that is not included in the schedule of material taken over by tho company, and the condition of the same, and raport at next meeting. Thr Audit Fees.—Tho Auditor-General applied for the sum of £0 for auditing tho county accounts.—The Chairman said he had consulted Mr W, M. Hay as to the legality of the charge, and that gentleman had promised to forward his opinion in time for the meeting, but it had not arrived.— Tho account was ordered to bo held over till next meeting. Pathtere.— Mr F. I>. Rich applied for £15 which had been voted by the Council for repairing the road near Mr Isaacs sanatorium. Mr Rich stated he had expended £'!) Is, and had let a contract for the balance. —It was resolved to pay forthwith the £'J Is, tha Council ruling it could not pay the balance until the work is done.

Valuation Roll.—No objections having been received to the list of proposed alterations of the valuation roll submitted at the last meeting, they were ordered to be mado. The following applications for alteration were received: —TV. Arnha Riding : A. L. Foreman to T. Wells, for property No. 08 ; G. Wiggins to Quinton, for property No. CO; F. Wmid to Wiu. MeClu.r, Cor part of property No. 1; G. L. Grant to Wm. Main, f< r property No. (>4 (Mr LavkwovLhy's estate). I'atetere Riding: \V. 1\ Haeeler to H. Haseler, for property ?no. 17. Matamata rid in#: Jab, Collins to Jno. Katcntie, for property No. 2(1. The necessary steps to comply with the alterations wore ordered to bo taken. Place of Mkk'l'inu.—Cr. Ilanmer, in accordance with notico of motion which ho had forwarded to the councillors, liiovod : " That the future tncwtiiiK* of the council beheld at MurmiiviUc."— l i'he Chair-nan ruled that the notices should have been sent out by the clerk, aud wero therefore informal. However, ho thought Cr. Hanmer was in order iu moving the resolution, as the Counties Act stated the Council could, from tiruo to time, change its place of meeting.—The motiou was then put and carriod by livo to four, the votiug beiug: For, the Chairnnn, Crs. Hanmer, Horrell, Herries, and Harrison; against, Cre, Bailey, Hunt, Heaney aud Browne. Next Mklting.—lt was resolved to hold the next meeting on Thursday, December 18th, at Morrinsvillu. Tenders.—Tne following tenders were received for gravolliiig the Thames-Wai-kato road, between Waihou and Te Aroha : Jas. Purr, ll.Jd per yard ; Reuben Parr, Is Gd ; Thoa. Stanley, lljd (informal); G. Q» Deveril, £98 19s (informal); Jas. Orr, lid ; J. Hanks, lid (informal); J. Shine, Bjd.— The last mentioned was accepted.
