At the Magistrate's Court t'j-day, at Masterton, Thomas Sloan was committed for trial on a charge of registering the death of Mary Bassio, wife of John Bassie, of Duntroon, under the name of Mary Ann Sloan. It appears that Sloan left lJuntroun with Mrs Bassie some three years ago, and they were living harmoniously together as man and wifo, until her death, when, to avoid curiosity and to protect his character, Sloan registered the woman as his wife. A firo broke ont in the new Roman Catholic Church, I'aliuerston North, this morning, tt was, however, extinguished before much damage was done. Incendiarism is suspected. The Government will not take any action ro tho federal ion convention till after the elections.
