HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Hamilton Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening at half-past seven, when there were present: — His Worship the Mayor (Mr I. Cnates) in the chair and Crs. Doy, Bell, Reid, Wood, Slade and Parr. Footpaths.—Mr J. Mullinna wrote re the condition of the footpath and watertables in Heaphy Terrace, also tho footpath in Wellington Street, and asked that something bo dune to them. The matter wau referred lo the luteuiau of works. Bhiiigk Swkkping.—The following tenders were received for sweeping the Hamilton Traffic Bridge:—J. Devitt, 2« Gd per wnk ; G. Mayes, £7 Ilia per nnnnni; G. Keep, 4s Cd per week, and H. Kelly, £9 7s (id per annum. Cr. Dey moved that J. Devitt's tender bo accepted, seconded by Cr. Wood and carried. Furzk Retort.—The Furze Committee reported that h number of those who had received notice to clear the furze had not done so, but they recomraeudwl that another month be given an by that time they thought most of it would ba cleared. A complete list ot those who had not complied with the notices was handed in with the report, which was adopted Wouiirt liKronT. —The Foreman of Works reported as follows: —"Many portion* of the main road are in a bad state, owing to grass growing alongside the gravelled portion ot tho road, and forming water» tables and channels where none should exist. As the curing of this would necessitate a largo amount of rflanual labour, besides costing a large sum of money, I would suggest that the Council provide a plough and scoop, as to do the portions of the road necessary, these are the cheapest tools that could be u.«ed for this purpose. I require a man to assist me now, as the roads are in a bad state." The report was received and adopted, and it was resolved that that portion of the road from No. 1 Bridge to the railway crossing be first attended to. Hia Worship generously otfered to provide a horse to work the scoop.

Late Foreman. —The Mayor reported that for the last four days of the week after tho new foreman of works had been appflinted, Mr Peaeosk had not assisted him in his work, as required by a letter sent to him from the Council. Hines, he said, had to start at an urgent job at No. t Bridge, single handed. Cr. Bell moved that payment for the last four days of the last week in which Mr Peacock was employed be stopped. Seconded by Cr. Pair.—Mr Peacock, who was in attendance, was asked for an explanation, and said that he had gone round with his successor, and was engaged in over-hauling the tools which he had to hand over, while Hines was at No. 1 Bridge. Ho ™id they could stop the four day's pay if they like, but he considered it a mean action. The motion was then put and carried, Or. Wood alone dissenting. Doc Registrar.—Cr. Dey moved that the services of the present dog registrar be retained at a remuneration of Is (id per collar. Seconded by Cr. Wood and cai<» ried.

Tenders.—The clerk was instructed to call for the annual tenders to be in at next meeting, and the Mayor and Crs. Scott and Parr were appointed a committee to draw up the necessary specifications. Accounts, —Payment of the following accounts was authorised G. Mayes, £1 Us lid ; Pannell, 19s (id: Taylor, us Gd ; 8. Tucker, £2 10s ; ,T. Devitt, £3 19s ; W. Peacock, ill 10s.

Hamilton East Baths.—The Mayor reported that bit by bit the baths were being taken away, and that a lot of obscenity was being written on the walls. It was ie<olved to inform tho police of this, and ask them to endeavour to prevent it. PliltaENT.—The Mayorformally presented to the Council the plan of Sydney Square (previously alluded to is these columns). He said that although perhaps of not much value at present it would be in generations to come. A hoarty vote of thanks on the motion of Cr. Parr, seconded by Cr. Doy wai accorded to His Worship for tl • valuable present. Jlbilke Reserve.—lt was dccided to employ Mr T. Kinir to clean up tho Jubilee Reserve.
