The Uev. Henry Parry Liddnn, JJ.D. (born 1820), Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, was a junior student of Christchnrch, Oxford, where he graduated in 1850. In 1851 ke obtained the Johnson Theological Scholarship Shortly after taking holy orders he went to Cuddesaom Theological College as vice-Principal (18.54 to 185!)), and in 1564 he was appointed Prebendary of Salisbury Oalhodral, having previously been the bishop's examining chaplain. By this time Mr Liddon had become known as one of the most prominent members of the Liberal High Church party, and one of the must eloquent and profound preachers of the day. Ho was select preacher at Oxford University in 1863, 1870, 1577 and 1884 In 1870 ho was created canon residentiary of St. Paul's Cathedral, and shortly afterwards Ireland professor of the exegesis of the Holy Scripture in Oxford University, when he was created U.l). This professorship he resigned owing to ill - health in 18S2. Dr. Liddon has been chiefly influential through his sermons, which have profoundly affected the thought of our time. He was an emphatic opponent of the Church Discipline Act, 1874, and helped to swell the public indignation against the Bulgarian atrocities of 187U by his letters to Tlio Times Ho was much interested in the conference for the Reunion of the Churches held at Rome in 1875.
