Tub Commissioner of Customs has decided a rather important point in connection with the shipment of hydraulic lime from iVhangarei, which has hitherto come in duty free. The Customs Department have subjected the lime to a chemical analysis, and having decided that it is identical with cement, demanded 12s 2d per ton. The Commissioner upholds the Collector's demand, The Government intend to proceed with the debate on the federation resolution this week, and bring the discussion to a close as early as possible. August 27. A quantity of wreckage has been washed ashore at Long Island. There is nothing to give a clue to the name, but the wreckage is apparently of some vessel of about 300 tons. Brisbane, August 26. The Nonvegau barque Joseph Toldestran from Sydney to Spain, which went ashore in Endeavour Strait and was abandoned by the crew, did not sink, as it was thought she would. The wreck was removed by a salvage party and towed to Prince of Wales Island.
