AUSTRALIAN STRIKE.
(BY ELKCTRIC TELKOKAI'II.— COI'YKIGIIT). Sydney', August 2G. Thr Union Company's steamers Ohau, Tarawern, and Taieri are being unloaded by free labour, of which there is plenty available. The employers have established a labour bureau, where non-Unionists can apply for work. Tliu cooks ami stewards still remain en the Union Company's vessels. There i s no material change in strike matters. The Shearer's Union has forwarded its first instalment of £10,000 to assist the strikers. August 27. Tho Associated miners at Newcastle were locked out to-day. Later. The Labour Defence Committee has dpcitled to allow the wharf labourers to discharge deep sen vessels. Arrived : Hauroto from Wellington." The principal Broken Hill Silver Minos are shutdown for want of fuel. About one thousand free labourers are employed, berthed and fed on the wharves. The labour committee announce they are prepared to undertake contracts for loading and discharging vessels. The Conciliation Court Bill dualing with the labour difficulties and introduced into the House of Assembly by Mr Dibbs, leader of the Opposition, provides that the court shall consist of five or six on each side with a permanent president, who is to have the status of a Supreme Court .Fudge. The Marine Engineers have by a majority of fourteen disapproved of the action of the Amalgamated Society of Eugineeis in calling the men out. Ijliishank, August 27. There is a good deal of excitement over the labour difficulty at Kockhampt-in, where public sympathy is against tinstrikers, and shopkeepers have refused to give credit to the latter. Volunteers are rapidly discharging the vessels. The police have been re-enforced by ISO of the permanent force under arm", who will be called out in caso of oinergency. Melikhtknk, August 26. The Unionists assaulted a party of free labourers, who had to seek refuge at the police station. The crew of the Tasmanian steamer Flinders have refused to strike. August 27. The gas stokers have gone out on strike but the Gas Company are confident they will be able to maintain the supply by free labour. At n meeting of employers it was resolved to urge employers who are not already members of the Union to join at once so as to ensure united action being taken in repelling the unjust demands of thd labour organisations. Arrangements have been rnnde to run cold trains from New South Wales, as the north eastern railway system is dependent on that colony for its coal supply. Newcastle, August 26. A largo crowd rushed the steamer (iwydir, dragged the free labourers from their work, and severely ill-used them. The men were ultimately rescued by the police. Lon don, August 25. Mr John 15urns writes that English workmen me willing Lo assist their brethren in Australia, and are confident the latter will be victorious before help is available to the capalists. August 2(5. A deputation representing the Sailors, Firemen, and Dockers Unions have naked for an interview with the directors of the British India Steamship Co. with a view to urging them to instruct their Australian agent to comply with tho demand of the maritime bodies in those colonies. The British India Company informed the deputation that they were unaware of any dispute alfecting their ships. Acting on a cablegram received bv Mr 10. Shipton, Secretary to the Trades Council, the Dockers' Union has resolved to extend moral and pecuniary assistance to the Australian strikers so soon as they hear the nature of the assistance required. Wellington, Tuesday. The wharf labourers have determined to strike to morrow if necussary. CiiKisTOiiuuuii, Tuesday. The Executive of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants to-night decided to cable to the president of the Maritime Council, Sydney, offering £500 per month from the Society. A levy of half-a-day's pay per month per member was struck until countermanded.
