Tamahere v. Tauwhare (Schools).
Tilk first match between the boys attending the Tamahcro and Tauwhare schools was played at Tauwhare on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for Tauwhare by 2 tries to 1, The Tamaliore boys were iniicli heavier than the local team and played a very hard game. The Tauwhare boys had tlie advantage of knowing the game wliilo their opponents were quite ignorant of the most important rules. Mr Graham was chosen to act a? umpire for both sides but dU not give satisfaction to Tamahere because he allowed the Tauwhare boys to pass the ball when collared, and did not make them " wait a bit" before they put the ball down or threw in out of (ouch. The Tamahero boys kicked hard in the scrums and in the open, but did not run with the ball after the first five minutes. They played with the wind and by hard kicking caused Tauwhare to force down several times. J. Walworth made several good rims for Tauwhnro but was wn)l collared each time and could not get through. All the Tamahere boys tackled well, especially Geff. Uodd andN. Cowley ; the latter was the only boy who did any running. J. Walworth picked up the ball behind a scrum near the centre flag and passed to S. Grigsby who ran in, scoring the first try for Tauwhare. The shot at goal was a failure. Soon after the kickout the ball was kicked from near the centre over Tauwhare's goal line, and N. Cowley by good following up secured a try for Tamahere which was not converted into a goal. The second spell was ashort one; the ball remained in Tamahere's -'■">, their kicking being returned by short runs and parsing. The ball crossed the goal line and was touched down by S. Shaw for Tauwhare, but George JJodd picked up the ball and putting it down claimed a force down. A try was granted to Tauwhare by the umpire. The crying of the Tamahere boys which had continued throughout the game now became unbearable, and time was called. Tauwhare did not take the kick at goal. On the Tamahere side there was little running and no passing. I'V Tauwhiue .T. Walwnrth played well at fnll-'.mck, and If. Snttor made a splendid cenlie forward. Tauwl.are heeled out ..f BVfii-y scrum and gave the backs too much to do. Their passing was very fair,
