POLITICAL NOTES.
(liv TKI.KiIIIAPII—OWN rOKKIWI'IINTiKNT.) WkI.UXiiTCN, Bast Night. THU LABOUR lil BUS.
,V WIIOI.K host ot amendments will be in ived in tie Lilmur I*• 111 -s in committee, ;■ ml their discussion is likely to lust for a week at least. I hear to-day that the Legislative Council will almost certainly throw out those Bills when they come hefore it. Tho meiribeis composing tli.it august, boily are in no way disturbed by the fact of n general election being imminent, and many of them consider tho Labour Bills lire quite unnecessary. Sill k.OBF.IIT STOUT. The latest report as to Sir Kobeit Stout's probable return to political life is, that if he again stands fur Parliament la! will contest the Oainaru seat, now IHd by the Minister for Education. It is well known that Mt llislop and Sir Robert are not exactly bosom friends, a fact which is proved by tho speeches delivered liy the latter at Oainaru during the rece-s, which were principally directed against the Minister fui Education. In nne of these addresses pivcii shortly after Mr l lislop was re-elected by his constituents last vear. Sir Robert referring to the Ward-Hislop all'air stated that when Mr llislop returned to Wellington. he was not received b/ his colleagues with open arms, but that 011 the contrary he was kept hanging about the Treasury Buildings for a day or two, before Ministers would communicate with him. This statement was linwe.-er subsequently contradicted by Mr llislop 10 the most emphatic terms. Should Sir Robert decide 011 stHiding for o.innni, a still' content may be anticipated between Mr llislop and the ex-l'remier. One chintr is tolerably crtain, that whatever Sir llobt's. intentions may be, ho will never again ask the Dnnediii electors to relurn him to I'arlianient. FACTORY LKl'• ISLATION. Arrangements were made 011 Saturday night, at a meeting of the Federated Trades 0 uitieil, that a deputation should wait 011 the I lovei'iiniont for the. purpose of explaining that, the masses of tile people were in favour of the Factoiies and Shop llouis r.r: 1 which is now before a select committee of jlie House. Sill .11 rLIUS VO<i KL'S CLAIM. The I'ost to-night commenting on the subject. says, the ilouse should instruct the 1 lo- einiiient as to how it is to meet the claim which Sit .1. Vogel has preferred against, the colony, undoubtedly that claim should be met upon its inerils, but the authority of I'arliainent, Ministers and their legal advisers mav not feel justified in abstaining from taking advantage ol some technical legal defence. It would, however, be exceedingly discreditable to plead tho statute of limitations or any sumla', technical defence to such a claim. The credit of the colony sulfered considerably at Heme by the manner in which the claims of Messrs Brogden and Sous were barred and defeated by narrow legil technicalities, and to deal with Sir J. Vngel's claim in a similar manner would have a still more injurious effect. If the colony honestly owes Sir .T. Vogel anything, it should pay him, and it should interpi.se 110 obstacle to the naiure of h s cl lim being ascertained by the ordinary process of l iw. It would be unworthy of the colony to try and escape any jus", legal or equitable claim by a technical objection. For the credit of the colony the House should see that a trial of the case 011 its merits takes place.
