HAMILTON AMATEUR DRAMATIC COMPANY AT OHAUPO.
TltK above company gave the inhabitants of Ohaupo and the surrounding districts a very enjoyable evening's amusement oil Thursday last, mid judging from the applause seemed also to be thoroughly appreciated. The performance by amateurs of a piece like '' Rob Roy" is of lather ambilious, but 1 really must give my candid opinion, which, J may add, is not mine alone, but of many others who were at the performance, namely that it was the most creditable performance of the kind ever seen in this distiict. The part of Rob Uoy was taken by Mr Thos. Slade, who showed that ho had well studied his part, and played it with determination, which i< especially necessary to this character, the only defect, if it may be called one, was in tho pronounciation of the Scotch language. MrJ. l'rimrose was especially ' pood in the character of Francis Oslialdistone, his singing and acting througho-.it being all that could be desired. As Ri.sleigli Mr lien. I'aif g.ive il splon lid ritprese.nution of the villain in tho plot, his whole mi personation being c.xc illeut. The character of Mr Owen, the head clerk and junior partner ill the tirm of < )baldisr,"ti.', was very ably sust lined by Mr A. Connolly and in the scenes with " Rob" in the liistact he was loully applauded. Mr (Seo. Mayes as the Donga I looked and played the patt as if lie. wero a born Higlander. Sir Frederick was ably represented by Mr G. Le' t )ne 'if the most dillicult pat to in this drama, th.i t of Capt. Thornton was taken by Mr Colli r whose acting would bo a credit on any stage. Tho humourous part of the l> Major' was most successfully taken, and hi* song was greeted with applause. Mac Stuart played by Mr J). Henry was undoubtedly tho life of tho Highland seme ill which ho took pait. The playing of G.ipt, Reid as the IVulie was greatly admire.l, and it was apparent to everyone that his ac'ing had the linish of a professional actor, more than that of an amateur. In the " Tolbooth " scene the rendering of the character was perfect, and again in the suene with the Major and Mac Smart where he applirs the hot, poker. The singing of Mi-s S. C.is-i.ly as Diana Vert on was all that could be. desired, and »he was deservedly encored for both songs. M-ss Klleti Cassidy played tho part of Helen M.ioGiegor with gre.it verve and looked extremely well i-i Highland costume. Miss Allen us Matty created a very favourable impression. Jean Mac Alpine and Martli i (Misses Xelson and Hlack) ably sustained their respective parts. The scenery which his been specially painted for tl.is play was much admired. Mr Me.ieheni conducted the musical porLions of the play in a very ellieiriit manner, Mi.-s K. S 1111■ ni pi lying the accompaniments throughout t l.e piiice.
