POLITICAL NOTES.
|nv TKI.ISCIHArit. —-OWN COHKKSI'ON'tIUN'T]. !' Wklun'oton', Last Night. THE COLLAPSE OF TIIK DEBATE. This No-Confidence debate suddenly collapsed this afternoon in the most extraordinary manner. Everybody expected that it would be kept going for some days yet, at any rato till tho end of the week, but it was evident to-day thai, there was no heart in it, as a whole ' host of members left tho Chamber at an early period of the sitting, and several of thorn did not return until after the division was taken. Upon the Speaker putting the question, Sir Maurice O'Rorke read the motion and amendment in the usual way, and it was observed that both Mr llryce and Mr Fish wero ready to get on their feet as soon as lie had finished. Mr Bryce, however, gave a significant look at the Ministerial benches, and kept his seat, Mr Fish also refraining from rising. It looked as if a "snatch " division were about to be taken as the speaker, without interruption from anybody called for tho. voices on the motion that the House go into Committee of Supply. Sir Maurice declareed that, the "ayes "had it, meaning that Mr Ballanee's amendment was lost, but Mr Hutchinson called for a division, upon which members came trooping in apparently astonished at a division coming so suddenly, tho result being 38 for the Government, and 32 for Mr Ballanee's amendment. There was evidently somo confusion about the pairs, as from a list supplied by the Government whip tto loss than twelve ministerialists wore said to he absent without being paired, namely, SirH. Atkinson, Wilson, lioetham, Buchanan, Carrol, Fulton. Hamlin, McKenzio (Clntha), Ormond, Pike, Montieth, Taipua, and Valentine, six Oppositionists were also returned as being unpaired, Messrs Brown, Fisher, Grimmond, W. P. Reeves, Seddon, and Taiwhanga. If this is correct it would of course give the Ministers a further majority of six, making a total majority of 12 against Mr Ballanee's amendment. .When the Speaker declared that tho amendment was lost by six votes there were some opposition cheers, and MiFish rose immediately afterwards and started another debate on the formal motion that tlio speaker leave tho chair for going into the Committee of Supply. DE F KNCK A PPOIXTMENTS. A return Ins been presented to the House showing that the following appointments have been mado during tile last financial year to tho Defence Department : •T. Fi. Hume, and T. K. Bernott, as sublieutenants in tho permanent militia, at a remuneration of A'lso and £100 per annum respectively, and W. H. Hill, torpedo in-.-t/uctor, £200 per annum.
