WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

The Usual monthly meeting of the _Waipaj County Council was held in tfie Council Ci>»<"be<r- Ohaupo, at U a.m. oil Tuesday. There were present: Crs. Lang (cjhairman), Hunter, Anderson, Finch, Smith and leasdale. Mr Armstrong, county engineer, was also in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were confirmed and the outgoing Correspondence for the month was read and approved of. Engineer's Report.—The Engineer presented his monthly reports ou works as follows:—The repairs to Campbell's Gully have been,, complbtedj as well an those \to Havelock's Bridge. /Che work of deepening the outfall drain on the Hamilton-Whatawhata road is all but completed, and the work is being done in a satisfactory manner. The contractors for re-forming and gravelling on the OhaupoCambridge road, although late in, starting with the work, are now pushing on in a satisfactory manner. The repairs. on too ' Whatawliata-Tuhikaraniea, Alexandra-Te Awamutu, and ..Te, Awamutu-Kihikiju roads haVe beeri Coinfiretdd, while those on the Ohaupo-Te Awamutu road aro in progress. The report was received and adopted.—The Engineer stated that some -months.ago.he the attention jotthe Council to the practice of some persons taking away gravel ftom the various cuttings in tho county. At that time a notice bad been given warning people not-to do this, and for a time the practice was discontinued. Since last meeting, however, he had observed that someone had been carting gravel away from tho cutting at Walker's Gully Bridge and in doing so had undermined about three-quarters of a chain of Mr Scott's fence which would soon fall, and for the repair of which the Council would be responsible. He had made enquiries but had been unable to find out who had been taking the gravel. On the suggestion of the Engineer it was decided to offer a reward of £1 for the conviction of any person removing gravel from any of the cuttings in the county and the_ clerk was instructed to advertise to that effect.

Mangapiko: Amouiit cf vote, £92 ; amount expended, £55 17s 3d; debit from last allocation, £12 19s 2.1 ; total expenditure, £08 10s 5d ; amount to expend, £23 3s 7d. Rangiaohia : Amount of vote, £93 ; amount expended, £04 10s 3d; debit from last allocation, £14 4s 4d ; total expenditure, £78 14s 7d ; amount to expend, £14 5s sd.—(a) Including aniomit for 10pairs to Ohote Creek Bridge, (e) Including amount for repairs to Walkers Gully Bridge.—The Clerk reported that the ! overdraft 5 at date was only £277 0s Id. ! —General satisfaction was expressed by j the councillors at the great redaction made and with the same_ judicious and eonomical management it is hoped that by the end "of the financial yoar there will be a balance in hand. With reference to the overdraft at tho end of March last, £390 9s Id, the Chairman moved : That the Bank overdraft at March 31st last be accepted by the Council as a first charge on the income of the current year. —Seconded by Cr. Anderson and can ied. Alexandra Ckmetkry Trust.—Mr R Ormsby, senr., wrote iuforniing the Council that Mr R. T. Millar had resigned as a trustee of the Alexandra cemetery, and

stating that tho remaining trustees expressed a hope that the Council would be pleased to appoint Mr Aubiu Ahier to till the vacancy. The chairman moved that Mr Ahier be appointed to succeed Mi Millar. Seconded by Cr. I 1 inch and carried. Hospital Bo.ma—A letter was received from tho Secretary to the Hospital Board, informing the Council of the resignation of Mr G. Finch, one of tho couuty representatives oil the Board. It was decided to suggest that Mr Anderson be recommended to the Board to fill Mr Finch's place. CobNTY Roal\ —The clurk to the Ngaruawahia Town Board wrote calling the attentiou of the Council to the state of the county road between the Waipa and Delta Hotels, where the water always lays for days after rain. The engineer said that the Board should assist in keeping the road through the townships in repair as was done by the other town Boards in the county. The clerk was instructea to reply that there are many other parts of the road in the riding require attention before the part mentioned, but that there are no funds available at present. Compensation.—Mr T. S. Weston wrote asking for compensation ou account of one acre one rood six poles of laud taken from Lot 313, Ngaroto, for a road. The clerk was instructed to reply that proper notices were given when the land was taken, ana that the road is not a county one, nor one under the control of the Council. Stoats and Weasei-s.— A letter in reply to the one sent at last meeting was received from the Minister of Lands stating that although no stoats or weasels have been liberated in the Waipa county, many have been liberated in various parts of the North Island, and that as the rabbits are increasing to such an extent in the North Island some stringent measures must be taken for dealing with tho pest. It was decided to again protest against the introduction of the stoats and weasels into the vVaipa county, and also to request tho Waikato, Pinko, and Raglan County Councils to support tho protest.

Slaughtering License. —Mr J. Bettley, of Hamilton, applied for a slaughtering license. The clerk reported that he had only received the application by telegram a few minutes before the Council sat, and he had not time to see if Mr Bettley had complied with the requirements of with regard to advertising. Mr Finch moved that on Mr Bettley carrying out the requirements of the Act and paying the necessary fee that the license be granted to him. Seconded by Cr, Teasdale and carried. Tenders.—'There was only one tender received for Contract No. 114, cleaning out a drain and laying a culvert near Mr Conn's place, viz., James Conn, whose prices were for cleaning the drain 4s (id per chain, and for the culvert 30s.—The Engineer stated that Mr Conn's price for the drain was much to > high, and it was resolved not to accept the tender. —Cr. Finch moved that fresh tenders bo called for, unless Mr Conn agree to do the drain at 2s per chain.—Seconded by Cr. Teasdale and,carried. • . Fuh/.e.t—lt was decided to givo notice that all persons in the county who have not cut down the furae, gorse, briar, &c., growing on the roads adjoining their respective property by the 12th August be proceeded against, Poisoning Rabbits.— Several councillors mentioned that it was the intention of the Rabbit Inspectors to introduce poisoned grain again for the suppression of the rabbits, and the whole of the members spoke against the proposal, as it would do away with any rabbits being sold, for which purpose large numbers were killed annually, and the poisoned grain was not so successful in poisoning the rabbits as in poisoning pigs, pheasants, &c. —The Clerk was instructed to forward a protest against poisoned grain being laid for rabbits in the Waipa, as they were more effectually kept down by shooting and trapping. Repairs.—The Engineer was instructed to have some necessary repairs attended to on the Te Awamutn station road. Payments.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—Kusabs and Sons, £18 !)s lid ; Castleton and Carsons, £12 7s fid; T. Cowley, £5 14s (id ; Fletcher and Vickers, £12 ; J. Spragg, £1 7s 4d ; H. T. Sibley, £2 12s lid ; T. Brennan, £2 17s l)d; W. Given, £2 17s Gd ; T. Jamieson, 15s ; W. Bearsley, £1113s 7d ;J. Carley, £3 7s 6(1; Higginson and Co., £42 5s Gd ; Engineer, £11 3s Sd ; M. Fitzgerald, £3 7s Gd ; W. Palton, 10s ; Ligurtwood, 5s ; G. Wade, 12s Gd; Kirk, £1 7s; Pukekura Road Board, ss; H. Had6eld, £1 7s lid ; Clerk* £i 2 4s. This was all the business.
