HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council wus'held at 7.30 p.m. ( .m Tuesday in the Council Chambers. r 'there were present: His Worship the, , Mayor, Mr I Coaten, and Crs. Dey, Wood, Davey, Ball, Parr, Scott and .Tories. . The minutes of the last ordinary and two special meetings were read and confirmed. Gkayel.—His Worship called attention , to the fact that the gravel had not been spread on the school roads, as authorised at last meeting.—The Clerk, stated that he j had spoken to tho contractor about the matter duriner the month, and he told him. , that he was too busy.—Cr. Parr said it was , absolutely neccssary that the gravelling j shou'd be done, as the road was a regular quagmire. , Borough By-laws.—Constable Wild ap- j plied for the expenses of witnesses for, tho ; ( prosecution (lßi)'Hi' the case against J.' ; Combes, brought under the borough by- , laws, and which had been dismissed, the Justices ruling that the by-laws were bad, Jones moved that the expenses be; ' paid.—Seconded by Cr. Scott, and carried, , Cr. Wood alone dissenting, as he thought • the matter should have had further investi- 1 ga ANGLE3EA-sTREEX. —Mr John Webb wrote, asking for something to be done to the road approaching his property from Anglesea-street. He had been p,lying rates for twenty years, and had no road to his property. —It was decided to grant the request. -Mid the matter was left in the hands of tli6 Works Committee, with power to Hii.lsboro Terrace.—Mr Webb called attention to the encroachment of the river on this road, which opposite Mrs_ Calderwood s place was only half-a-cliain wide. At his suggestion, some time back, willows had been planted along the bank to protect it, but nothing had been done to keep the cattle from the willows, and they were deatroving them. He suggested that a few chains of fencing be put along the bank to protect the willows.—The Mayor said that he intended bringing this matter up later on, and it was accordingly deferred. Hospital Contribution.—A letter was received from the Secretary to the Hospital Board, requesting payment of the contribution due by the borough—£so l(>s Bd.—His Worship moved that one half " the. amount be paid as soon a« the borough is in funds. -Seconded by Cr. Scott, and carried. Crossings.Frear and «J. Cassidy applied for crossings into their properties in Victoria and Grey-streets respectively.— It was decided to grant the requests, Mr Frear's being subject to his having the crossing facing Victoria-street. . Accounts.— Payment of the following accounts was authorised :—W. Taylor, 4s !)d : Manktelow, £114s ; Waite, £1 lis Gd; \V« Andrew, £1: G. Mayes, £1 8a IO.Jd ; J. Cr. Pannell, 19s 3d ; J. Parr, 14s lOd. Works.—The foreman of works reported that during the month the following works had been carried out Furze cut, and water-tables cleaned out in Victoria and
Firth-streets, lamp replaced in the centre of the bridge, repairs done to Coates road, drain at the saleyards cleaned out, repairs 'done : io' rlillsboro-street, culvert constructed in Victoria-street opposite the gravel pit. pipes raised in Rostrevor-street, gnlly boxes cleaned out, and tho repairs to the bridge aro m pi ogress. He recommended that a culvert be put in between Richmond and Victoria-street, to prevent the rush of water from Richmond-street to the bridge approach. — The report was adopted. PouNDKEKi'EU.—The poundkeeper reported for April and May, that there had been 4 horses and 5 head of cattle impounded, and one cow sold for 15s, aud one horse for £5. The adoption of the report was deferred, the clerk to get particulars with respect to the horse sold. Doo Registrar.—The dog registrar reported that he had registered 17 dogs during the month. . Street Preaching.—Cr. Wood said that now the by-laws were being amended, he thought it was necessary that one should be brought into effect to put a stop to street preaching. Othor Councillors spoke to the same effect.
Fuuze.—The Furze Committee having drawn up their report with reference to those persons having furze growing 011 the roads adjoining their properties, Cr. Jones moved that Mr G. J. W, Barton bo tho person authorised to sign all notices with reference to the clearing of furze, etc., w accordance with the Public Works Act Amendment Act, 18S9.—Seeonded by Cr. Dey and carried. Ilia Worship then moved that notices bo sent to all and everyone having furze, etc., growing on the road and adjoining their properties.—Secanded by Cr. Jones, and carried. Rate. —His Worship moved that at next meeting he will move that a general rate of Is in the £ be struck for the current year. —Seconded by Cr. J ones, and carried. An amendment by Cr. Bell that the rate be 1b 3d in the £ lapsed for want of a seconder, and one by Cr. Davey that it be Is Id in the £, seconded by Cr. Wood was lost. Notice of Motion.—His Worship gave notice that ho would mova at next meeting that £1.000 ofthe £4000 loan be transferred to the general account ac the first August. This concluded the business.
