FOOTBALL.

Hamilton v Paterangi. The first football match of the season among the senior clubs was played on Saturday afternoon last on Sydney Sq.iare, Hamilton, between the above clubs. Neither club had their best teams in the field and the return match will be looked forward to with much interest as the position is at present the same as previous to the match, which resulted in a draw, both sides scoring a try (two points). Mr W. Hammond asted as captain for the Hamilton team and Mr Graham filled a like position for Paterangi. Messrs Bowden and Gwyntie umpired for Paterangi and Hamilton respectively, while Mr Bayly filled the position of referee. The game throughout was a very fast one, and owing to the wet state of the ground the play was confined mostly to the forwards. In the first spell Hamilton had rather the best of the game, and G. Mayes secured a try near the corner flag which Johnson failed to convert into a goal. Paterangi in this spell played one man short, but at the interval J. Graham joined in and in the second spell the order of the play was reversed, Hamilton having to act on the defensive. Jas. Ryburn, who played a sterling game all through, by a piece of splendid following up secured a try for Paterangi about a yard from the Hamilton goal post. W. Goble's kick at goal was a poor one and made no addition to the score. From this on matters were very lively, the Hamilton forwards setting on some splendid fast rushes, but these were neutralized by the Paterangi backs. When time was called no further addition had been made to the scores. For Paterangi P. Bowden played a sterling game, as also did J. Ryburn and llatiina-. I. Goble would have more time for playing if he did not talk so much. (This remark might be attended to by nearly the whole of the players). Corboy shone occasionally, as also did Graham and W. Goble. For Hamilton, the whole of the forwards worked hard, but Hopkins, Gassidy and Bayliss were the best, being always on the ball. W. Hammond did a lot of useful work among the backs, and Odium and Mayes were conspicuous at times, but all the players showed want of practice,

At a meeting of the Ohaupo Football Club, Mr A. Kusabs resigned as captain, and Mr I. Uoble was elected in his ste id. A match between the Ohaupo and Paterangi Clubs will be played on Saturday next.
