RAGLAN.
Evening Paiuiks.—Tho season for festive gatherings having arrived, the opening ball took place at Ruapuka, There was a very large gathei ing, nearly one hundred being present, including several visitors from Auckland. Dancing was kept up till the early hours of the morning, Mr J. Galvan acting as M.C., which duties he performed in a most efficient manner. On Friday evening last the bachelors of Te Mata gave a dance and entertainment to their friends. A very numerous company assembled, and the school-room, in which the party took place, was crowded. Songs, recitations, and dancing were the order of the day, or rather of the night, and were kept up till nearly break of day. The catering was everything that could be desired, and everybody expressed themselves as highly pleased with the evening's entertainment. Flax.—On her last visit our local trader, the s.s. Glenelg, which arrivsd on tho morning of the 10th inst., and after unloading her cargo for this place, took on board from the new wharf and further dinvn the stream opposite the Te Akau station a large quantity of bales of flax , . Kawhia.—The steamer got away horn Raglan the same evening, crossing the bar about 5 p.m., arriving in Kawhia harbour soon after 7 p.m. She took en board a large quantity of flax from Langley Bios', mill, and left Kawhia on Saturday evening, arriving safely at Onehunga on Sunday morning , , at 3 a.m. Lα Gkipi'E.—This complaint seemed to be passing a>vay some time since. But, like "a bad shilling," it has returned again, and several families have suffered from it. Mr La Trobe, teacher of the district school, with many of his scholars, were last week laid up, so that the school had to be closed for the week. But we are glad to say they are now better, and the school work again goes on. Many of the Maoris, too, have this epidemic, and it is felt somewhat severely by them, especially by those advanced in years. Weatheu.—Sharp frosts have prevailed during the last few days, bright clear days following, with beautiful sunsets each night. ____^__^____
