(by telegraph.—press association). Wellington, Last Night. Thi: Governor has l-ioeu advised that the Queen has conferred on the Hon. Morgan Grace, M.L.C., the Companionship of St. Michael and St. Gorge. This honour was recommended by Sir William Jervois in LSB7, in recognition of Dr. Grace's services as the head of the Military Medical Department of the colony during the war times. A deputation from the auctioneers waited on the Secretary of Customs to-day, protesting against the increase of duty on fruit. Hitherto importers have paid : oranges, 5s per case, lemons, 7*, and apples, -Is, and the Customs now propose to increase them as follows: oranges, 10s, lemons, 12s, apples, Ss. After some discussion, it was arranged that the importers should submit returns of sales for the last six months to the Customs, and that in future duty should be paid on the- actual values received during that period.
