AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(BY ELECTRIC TELIMHAPH.— COPYRIGHT.) Sydney, May 8. A co-operative company of those engaged in the pastoral industry has been formed, with a capital of £150,000. They have acquired the business of a leading firm, and intend to enter into the wool and frozen meat export trade on a comprehensive scale, and erect the largest warehouses in Australasia.
Three men, named Prince, Passmore, and Gibbins, were sentenced by the Egeria court martial, on two charges of disobedience, to nine months' imprisonment, and to be dismissed from the service. Two others, Bulby and Thomas, were sentenced to six months' imprisonment and dismissal.
The Railway Commissioners have purchased Rogers' patent railway ballaster for £4000,
Arrived : Lubeek, from Samoa. She brings news that the American trading schooner H. L. Tiernan foundered at an island. Eleven native passengers were drowned, but the crew were rescued. Two small vesspls belonging to Messrs McArthur were also lost, with three lives. The German warship Alexandrine had arrived at Samoa with la grippe on board.
Melbourne, May S. Mr Gillies, Premier of Victoria, has received a cablegram from Lord Knutsford proposing that the Western Australian Enabling Bill be modified so as to preclude Chinese who are British subjects, from the operation of the Act.
Bishop Thornton, in his address to the Anglican Assembly, at Ballarat, directed the clergy and laity never to avail themselves of the Victorian Divorce Act. The clergy were on no account to re-marry persons divorced under it.
The Hon. F. T. Derham, PostmasterGeneral, has accepted an invitation from the Postmaster-General of South Australia to attend a Conference at Adelaide to discuss the postal reduction. He explaius his principal object is to bring forward the desirability of reduction in cable rates to the colonies.
Brisbane, May 8. If the other colonies agree to the proposed postal reduction, Queensland will not object to join, but will reserve the right to institute a penny postage by the British India steam service, the latter proposal only to apply to sea routes.
