THE HOSPITAL VERANDAH.

TO THK EDITOR. Sir,—As a ratepayer I enter my protest against the way in which the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board have been wasting our hard-earned money. (Vide your report of their last meeting). I for one think that the affair of the botched verandah ought to be sifted to its very bottom, for there seems no doubt that someone has erred, either wilfully or otherwise. I suppose the superintendence and passing of such works rest with the House Committee, comprising the Chairman and Messrs Sandes and Seddon, but, as the latter condemned the whole thing as a botch, I scarcely think he can be to blame. Perhaps one or both of the others will give us their version of the affair. With many thanks to Mr Evans for the exposure.—l remain, yours truly, A Lover of Justice. Hamilton, May !)th.

[Wo have made enquiries into this matter, and find that Mr Evans, who has raised this question, is entirely to blame himself. We understand he drafted the specifications, and, from what appeared in the report of the late meeting of tho Hospital Board, these only specified kauri and totara for particular portions of the work, which were complied with. For the other portions of the work where no particular class of timber was specified, the contractor used what suited him best. This is simply another case of penny wise and pound foolish on the part of the Board in not calling in professional assistance.—Ed, W. T.]
