NEW ZEALAND BUTTER IN LONDON.

■» . Mil W. A. Muniuv, Mount Pleasant, Piako, has placed at our disposal a letter quite lecently received by him from a gentleman in England, in which appears a paragraph, referring to New Zealand butter, and in one case that came under his notico, which the writer refers to, it explains the low price frequently senn qnoted in commercial reports. New Zealand has almost

invariably been spoken of as being peculiarly adapted and especially favoured in its climate for producing butter of the finest quality, and old experienced makers themselves say that they never made better butter in the "Old Country," yet from time to time wo are confronted in the prices qnoted in London for Australian and New Zealand butter, very much in favour of the former. This may be;O'wet.d for if the charges contained in the following letter are general and well founded :— "About two years ago I wrote to you about the shipments ot butter from New Zealand to this country, a trade which with care and attention, might havo developed largely. But it appears that some of your dairymen instead of shipping their surplus stocks last year, have held them over to this year, and are now sending them over to this country. But we don't want stale butter hers. Confectioners won't have it; it is not even good enough to be sent to the continent to be made into margarine. Nobody will use it. I don't know what it is> fit for. I am told that 37s per cwt was offered for a parcel last week. How short sighted to act in this way. Good sound and fresh butter will feteh from 100 d to 120s per cwt., which should leave a fair margin, but to ship such trash like the afure namod is waste of time and throwing money away. If you have influence, and I believe you havo considerable, you might bring it to bear upon these benighted dairymen, for the good of your country."
