(BY TELEGRAPH— PUESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Last Night. The sittings of the Appeal Court opened this morning, and was occupied the whole of the morning fixing the order of business. On Ist May butcher's meat will be advanced from id to 2d per lb, according to joint, both beef and mutton. The Government's attention having been directed to the case of youths sent to Taranaki from London undnr the auspices of Mr Courtney, they have communicated with the Agent-General requesting him to take steps to prevent the continuance of the misapprehension that may exist respecting Mr Courtney's statements and powers. Up to the present the Trade and Labosr Council has paid £250 for the maintenance of families thrown out of work by the Petone woollen mill difficulty. This sum includes the levies made by tho outside Unions. In the bankruptcy Court to-day, Mr Justice Richmond said he was not disposed to grant applications for the discharge of persons who tiled because they were pressed by judgment summons creditors. The date of the opening of Parliament has been definitely fixed for 19th June. Arrived: Akaroa, barque, Capt Cuthbert, 124 days' from London. Dr. Hadfield, Primate, and the Bishops of Dunedin and Waiapu left for Christcharch this afternoon, to attend the consecration of the Bishop-elect of Christchurch. A meeting is called for Wednesday night to discuss the rise in the price of meat, when a co-operative scheme, for the protection of the public, will be discussed. The Resident Magistrate gave judgment to-day in the case in which Peter Garbes, oyster dealer, was charged with expssing for sale rock-oysters during the close season. It was urged by the counsel for the defendent that there was nothing in the act to prevent oysters taken from open waters being sold in other parts of New Zealand. But the counsel for the other side submitted that there was no distinction whatever in fish which came from close or open districts, as the defendant was not charged v/ith exposing them for sale in open districts but in Wellington during the season proclaimed as closed. His Worship convicted the defendant and fined him 20s and costs. Counsel for defendant gave notice of appeal.
