OCEAN MAIL RATES.
PROPOSED REDUCTION.
(BY TELEGRAPH—I'ItKSS association),
Wellington, Last Night'. The Government have received a telegram from the Agent-General asking if they are prepared to make recommendations to Parliament in connection with the proposed reduction in postal rates. A reply has been sent that they will be quite prepared to consider the proposals when the full Cabinet meet*.
The Postmaster-General considers there would be no difficulty in the way of accepting a reduction of revenue if the colony were sufficiently elastic to stand the loss, but he has doubts if the colony would consent to increased taxation to make up the deficiency.
(BY KLEOrRIO TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) Melbourne, April 25. Arrived last night Wairarapa from the Bluff. On her arrival, at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce a motion was passed expressing approval with the proposed postal reductions to the colonies. It was also suggested that it would be preferable to join the Postal Union.
