WHATAWHATA.
A gexkk.u, feeling of regret has been expressed at the serious illness that lias overtaken John Calder, the son of our wellknown settler. The difficulty is with the lungs, that weak spot in so many New Zealanders. Young Calder is now in the hospital, and under the skilful care of Dr. Kenny we hope soon to see him convalescent again. It is at a time like this when '.mr friends and relatives are suddenly stricken down, that the. advantages of having a well-appointed hospital in our midst are brought home to us. Much has been said and written about what, to struggling taxpayers, has appeared unwarrantable extravagance in connection with hospital and charitable aid administration, bnt no one questions the wisdom of the step taken by Mr \V. A. Graham in separating from the Auckland district, and few would care to part with the hospital, though its establishment aod maintenance has been a heavy drain on our somewhat slender resources.
Regarding the general health of the district, there is no doubt the mysterious visitant La Grippe has reached Whatawhata, though not, we hope, with any intention of making a prolonged stay, and following its usual course of attacking the most eminent persons first, it pitched upon our representative to begin with, who is, therefore, able to corroborate everything that has been wiitten about La Grippe, only more so. Cases are cropping up here and there, but, with ordinary care and some of Dr. Murch invigorating though unpalatable medicine, it is soon got over. The danger will bo with those who are in a delicate state of health, for though a comparatirely mild complaint, it is very weakening in its effects.
