(BY TELEGRAPH—PIIESS ASSOCIATION".) Whanoahui, Thursday. A Nokthkkm A nvocATU extra hasjust been issued, announcing the discovery of a rich gold reef in the forest reserve, Kaitara, about eight miles from Whangarei. Hikubangi, Thursday. There is great excitement in Kamo and Whangarei, over a gold disoovery in th« three-mile bußh in the direction of the head of the Kaitara River. Over 100 miners' rights have been taken out, and the holders are galloping off to peg out. It is described as a dark snuff-coloured friable stone, with the gold visible to the naked eye. It must be the casing of a burnt reef. Thames, Thursday. A Press Association telegram published in the Thames Star to-night, announces the discovery of a rich gold reef at Kaitara, some 40 milos from Puhipuhi, and that six pounds of stone taken therefrom had been assayed at the Thames School of Mines for the return equal to 1940z of gold per ton. With a view of ascertaining the correctness of the latter statement I waited upon Mr Park, director of the School of Mines, this evening, and that gentleman informed me that ho has had no samples of quartz for assay from the district in question, neither lias he any knowledge of the assay referred to. Whangarki, Last Night. The Kaitara assay return turns out to bo the result of a blunder on the part of the assayer. Constable Ward has just received a telegram from Mr Inder of Coromandel, informing him that the stone which was believed to be worth 191 ozs., of gold per ton, is of no value. The crucibles used in the test were mixed, thus causing tha error.
