The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.
SATURDAY, MAR. 1, 1890.
Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political.
It will be seen from a notice appearing in this issue that the Waikato Farmers' Club have completed their arrangements with Professor Thomas, of the Auckland University, for a course of three lectures upon the subject of Agricultural Soienco, to be delivered in Waikato The first of these will be held in the Public Hall, Cambridge, on Tuesday next, March 4th ; the next at the Public Hall, Te Awauiutu, on Wednesday next, March sch j and
the third of the series will be delivered in the Public aud Volunteer Hall, Hamilton, on Thursday next, March 6th. Wo sincerely trust the efforts of the Club, which is deserving of all praise, will be duly appreciated by the farming community and the general public for the trouble they have been to in the matter. In these days of small profits and restricted margins between cost of produstion and the returns therefrom, it has become an absolute necessity for agriculturalists, as well as those engaged in oth«r pursuits, to keep abreast of the times. Ife can truly be said of farming, as of other industries, that success is obtained not so much by gross results as by producing at the lowest possible cost; in other words, by keeping down expenditure. A knowledge of agricultuaal science is a very important step in this direction. It will enable those engaged in farming to determine not only the value of manures, the lack of which knowledge proved so disastrous in the past to many amongst us, but it would also enable the agriculturist to provide through the medium of artificial manures, the particular assistance certain soils require, and its quantity, and in this way guard against losses often made through the use of unsuitable manures.
The Waikato Farmers' Club have taken an intelligent and practical step, in inaugurating this series of lectures, and we trust the farming community, in whose interest they have moved, will mark their appreciation of this Club's efforts, by attending, if possible, the whole course, as the lectures will embrace different branches of the subject on
each occasion,
