LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS.

(BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, Last Night. Charles Santley left for the South by the steamer Takainma this afternoon to keep his other New Zealand engagements. At the Resident Magistrate's Court a case which has been arousing considerable interest in volunteer circles is proceeding. The case was that of the Official Assignee v. Kohn, claim £85 2s to recover money for overcoates due by the City Guards to the estate of Major lssacs. Mr George F. Ireland, a partner in the firm of Ireland Bros., tanners and curriers, died this morning at his residence at Panmure. Mr Ireland was a well-known business man of over 27 years' standing in Auckland, although he took but little part in public life. To-day a special general meeting of those interested in the Otarua gold claim, situated in the Kuaotunu district, was held, and, after .some discussion, it was resolved to form the syndicate into a public compauy, with n capital of 4800 shares of 10s each, nil being paid up. The Selection Committee of the Auclc land Cricket Association have chosen the following team to represent Auckland against New South Wales on Friday and Saturday next :—Messrs Fowke, Gardner, Kissling, Lusk, McPherson, Meldrum, Mills, Richards, A. Rees, Stemson and Yates. Emergency: Neill. Messrs T. G. Sandes, of Hamilton, and M. Gallagher, of the Imperial Hotel, have given two bats, whiqh are to be presented to the players obtaining the highest score in the single innings, and the greatest number of runs in both innings, respectively, and Mr W. L. Rees has given a ball for the best bowling in the match. At a meeting called by tho Anti-property Society, a resolution was proposed in favour of a agitation for the abolition of the Pro-perty-tax, but amendments were propose-! and the meetinsr eventually adjourned without taking a vnte.
