LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

(by telegraph—press association.)

Wellington, Last Night. The contract lias been let for the formation of ten and a quarter miles of the railway from Oxford towards Rotorua, price about £•37,000. From tiiH terminus, the six of road to the main road will shorten the coach road to twelve miles, and will enable Rotorua to be reached in one day from Auckland.

A case came before His Honour the Chief Justice in the Supremo Court this afternoon, in which a Chinaman named Hons* Sairi Slim sought to recover the sum ot £10 from the Commissioner of Customs. It was chieljy confined to argument by coiuisol, but the facts wprs that at the time "The Chinese Emigration Act, 1881," came into force, plaintiff was a residont in the colony, and within two months of tho passing of the Act, he obtained a certificate of exemption. In ISB7 he left on a visit to China, but neglected to take out another exemption certificate as required by the 14th section of the Act. He returned to Auckland in August last by the S.S. Whatnpoa, and the Collector of Customs caused him to pay the usual tax of £10 on the ground that he had no exemption certificate as required by section of the Act. After the argument the piiueiprd question submitted to His Honor was whether the plaintiff was really the holder of the exemption certificate granted two months after the passing ot the Act, judgment was reserved.
