CAMBRIDGE DOMAIN BOARD,
ro ran KsmriHt. 3ib,—On my return from the South my attention haa been drawn to a report of a meeting of the Cambridge Domain Board appearing in Thk Waikato Timks of December 31st, ISS9. The report consists chiefly .of a letter of mine, together with the Board's comments find resolution thereon. Although I have arrived somewhat late upon the field of action, I feel certain that, as your columns are always open for fair play, you will kindly allow me to reply in my own defemeo, as both your reporter and the Board style my letter as '* insulting." I would be glad if they would be so good a» to [joint out the passages therein contained to which this adjective is supposed to apply. Should they be able to do so I would feel obliged as a geutlernan to render a full apology. The case is thus :—I have always paid the lent regularly every six months : On thn 12th November the usual notice requesting payment within 14 days was posted to me (I have tho notice before me now) there is no mention of Tuesdays anrt Fridays being office days. Going to th* tumble of finding out tho office days for myself, 1 forwarded the rent at the proper office hours, and tound the office closed. Then almost before the 14 day* were up I received a letter threatening me with legal proceedings. I :isk you, Sir, would not any gentleman feel himsalf insulted by such treatment. Certainly, it may be said thut I used rather strong language in my letter, but it must be remembered that I had previously complained nbont the same thing in somewhat milder language, but evidently with little or no effect. I flatter myself that in dealing with people to whom strong language only is intelligible, I have that commodity available. I can well imagine that my letter would be considered as high treason of the deepest, die. when addressed to such an august autocrat as the chairman of the Domain Board, but unfortunately my cranium fails to shew any bump of veneration for autocrats. At the same time I cannot but feel gratified to seo that my letter received the attention of the whole Board, while three members were sufficient to carry through the less important business of the annual meeting and election of chairman. With regard to forwarding tho rent by post as the Board so graciously suggest 1 -, I may say that I have tvicd that experiment also, and found myself just in the same predicamont, as I had to call at the office personally for a receipt. In concludion, Sir, I own that I pay the rent "f?rtidßingly and of necessity." because, as a rate-payer of Cambridge West, I feel it my duty to protest as forcibly as possible against the Board's gross misappropriation of the Cambiidge West moneys. I may gay that my remarks apply to the Board rather than its Clerk. It would be foolish of mo to make a fuss about so casual an j incident as the office being closed on one or two occasions. The only thing I complain of is the Board's unseemly hurry with their threats of legal proceedings.—Yours truly, H. R. Htatt.
