THE NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION.

AUCKLAND EXHIBITS (contisukd.)

(PROM OUR SPECIAL COKRKSrONDKNC.) Christmas was a decidedly lively one at the exhibition. "The Messiah which was given on Christmas night uud Bimiiß nij<ht wa9 so well attended that hundreds were turned away on both nights, and the oratorios have to be repeated, probably at Easier. Miss Julia Kniglic, of Auckland, hae proved herself a great favourite here, securing double encores almost every time ehe sings. Neils Jade's new cantata "Comala" did not prove the brilliant success that wai anticipated. It went well, and personally I thought it thn finest thing I had heard since I left the Old Country, but it was too high class for the' olla podroi— there were no jingling Pinafore airs in it and so it did not take so well. Nevertheless the second performance is announced and may take. The inevitable troublo that occurs at all Exhibitions is taking place here. In spite of all warnings stall-keepers will soil goods, and the Executive spurred on thereto by the Dunetliu tradesmen, threaten to bundle them out neck and crop. A man nomed Day, who is a perfect firebrand on a small soale, has taken the matter up on behalf of the stall-holders. He himself is only an English Exhibitor's agent, but hopes to get a cheap advertisement by making a noise, I suppose. Day threatens if his proteges are interfered with, to take the matter into court. Privately the exentive realise the hopelessness of attempting to suppress selling, but a number of share-holders are locsJ tradesmen who must ba pacified.

The London Exhibition scheme is progressing famously. Mr Fergus has declared publicly at a dinner in favour of it, and it is known that three other Ministers are also favourably disposed towards it. But all depends on Atkinson, of the big boots, who is expected now to return sooner than was anticipated. Last week I left you in the middle of a. description of the Auckland exhibits, and I will take that up just where I left off. Mr H. Dobbie exhibits orange marmalade from the Wairere orchard, Whangarei. Messrs H. K. Cooke and Co., of the same place, show some of their insecticide, which should be useful just at the present time when cudlin moths and other terrible afflictions are about. Messrs Handtorth Bros., of Whangarei, exhibit tinned mullet. A curious exhibit is Robert's Acme Kerosina Tilt, guaranteed to save oil from spilling from the can when being drawn off. Another God-send to housewives ie Waite's Pire-listhter, a very simple and most ingenious contrivance, saving all trouble in lighting fires. Steedman and Sons, of the Thames, have a very fine show of tinned peaches and tinned tomatoes. R. Robinson, of Auckland, has a sort of Gothic arch built of tins of his universal disinfectant, Masefield Bros., of Bailey, Kaipara, have a very large trophy of tinned goods, including roast mutton, pork, sausages, kippered Rchnapper, mullet, and fruits in syrup. L. D. Nathan and Co. have a large handsome case containing saddlery. A dozen well-finished, good, substantial-looking saddles are shown, and have attracted considerable attention. Another handsome trophy of tinned goods is that exhibited by Messrs R. and \V. Hellaby, of Auckland, and including boiled mutton, venison, boiled beef, sausages, tripe, veal, sciced meats, minced callops, and all sorts of other dainties. Mr James Wiseman exhibits two of his seamless stock saddles, made upon a patent block and evidently capital wearing geods. Yet another trophy of tinned goods is tbot of Ewing and Co., who shraw tinned mullet. The Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Limited, have a handsome show vase containing samples of their various makes of sugar in pretty glass show jars ; also syrups, crude and refined, brewer's crystals, &c. A number of highly finished half section models of yachts are Known by Mr C. Bailey, of Auckland. Mr J. J. Craig exhibits his hydraulic lime and concrete made from it. Ehrenfried Bros., of the Phoenix Brewery, show bottled ales and stjuts, also mineral waters. J. Wilkinson and Son, of Auckland, shows toe and heel plates. Mr A. Sanford has a novelty in the shape of jellied smoked schnapper. Tho Golden Gem Infant'a Food is also shown. Exceedingly pretty exhibits are an inlaid table and an inlaid jewel casket. The colouring is excellent, yet all is done by different shades nf wood untinted. Miss Alice Tye shows skeleton leaves. J. Hall exhibits bolts, nuts, rivets, &c. F. Williams shows tinned Auckland smoked schnapper. Mr T. W. Coperaan shows two Orne carriages—perambulators — with parogon wheels, well made poods. The Auckland Evening Star shows a quantity of printing and lithographic work. This about exhaustr, my space and still the Auckland Court is not more than half gone through, bo that, you see Auckland is well represented at the Exhibition.
