Melbourne, Jauuary 22. Tub Age asserts that there is friction between the Premier and Lord Hopetoun, in couseqnence of the action of the Government in cutting down the estimates for Government House. The amount set down in this year's estimates is less by sixteen hundred pounds than was provided for the last three Governors.
No formal programme has yet been arranged for the proceedings of the Federation Conference. The main question for consideration, however, is the desirability of union. If this is agreed upon, then probably the delegates will be requested to recommend their respective Parliaments to appoint representatives, who shall form a convention to draw up a constitution. January 24, Two miners named Couch and Davis has been arrpsted at Sandhurst, for trying to steal plates from the quartz crushing battery. Each confessed, implicating others in the murder of a night watchman named Trevithick. The heat during the past 10 days has baen unprecedented, the thermometer being higher than for fifteen years. Sydney, January 22. In the case against the owners of the steamer Centennial the Court ruled that the bill of lading exempted owners of the vessel from liability for cargo lost by the sinking of that steamer. Leave to appeal was granted. Sir Henry Parkes and Mr McMillan represent New South Wales at the Federation Conference ; Messrs Gillies and Deakin will represent Victoria ; Sir Samuel Griffith and Mr Macrossan arc the Queensland representatives; Messrs Clarke and Bird represent Tasmania, and Sir John Thurston, Fiji. Adelaide, January 28. Heavy rains have fallen, and great quantities of cut wheat have been destroyed in consequence , Perth, January 23.
Lord Knufsford has cabled forbiding delegates from Western Australia visiting the eastern colonies, lest they should be urged to support the colony's claim to a Constitution. Public feeling here strongly condemns this action.
