THE CAMBRIDGE DOG REGISTRAR.
At the last meeting of tho Cambridge Borough Council, Mr R. B, Fit/.patrick was an applicant for the office of Registrar of Dogs, but his tender was worded in such an ambiguous manner that the Council could not tell whether he really intended to apply for the registraralup or for the supply of dog collars, and consequently another nerson was appointed. Since the meeting Mr Fitzpatriek has denounced the councillors in no measured terms, and says if they could not understand his application they are a set of " dunder-headed fools." Mr Fitzpatrick'a tender was clearly informal, as he made no mention of security, and on that account must have been discarded. As he is, however, homo multarum literarum, we append his application and a subsequent letter referring to it, beth being given in extenso, with all " appartainin? thereto, which, we think will fully vindicate the Borough Councillors. They are as follows : To the Mayor and Members of tho Borough Council of Cambridge. Gentleman,—With reference to your advertisement lequiring tenders for the office of Registrar of Dogs, I beg most respectfully to tender my services for the same, leaving to your August body to determine whether my defective hearing is in any way detrimental to my performing the duties appait.lining thereto. I may however observe that I am perfectly well acquainted with the names of the people of the district, and cannot see any obstacle to my carrying out the duties requisite for the position. With respect to the supplying of Dog Collars, 1 am prepared to do them at the rate of Is per collar. Should you see fit to accept of my tenders for both, the Mayor Membars of tho Borough Council will have no cause to complain of tho manner in which the duties will be carried out. I beg to remain Mr Mayor and Gentlemen of the Borough Council of Cambridge, Your obedient Servant, Rkginald B. Fitzpathick. 6th January, 1890. Mayor and Members of the borough Council of Cambridge. Gentlemen,—Having put ill a tender for the position as Registrar of Dogs and the issueing of Dog Collars, but having also by some oversight left it somewhat doubtful as to which position my tender of Is per collar is for, I now take this opportunity of pointiog out t.iat my tender of Is, which I tendered for the issueing of the Dog Collars, is for both Registrar and Collars as well.—l remain, Gentlemen, Your Obedient Servant, Reginald B. FITZI'ATKICK, This is locally known as the Cambridge puzzle." It is worse than " pifrs in clover, or (i cows in corn," and would worry a saint to find out what the writer meant.
