Tin; Races. —It is generally thought that the estimate cf the number present in your report of the races hold here on Boxing-Day, viz., 300 was greatly under the mark, as at least -ome 500 to (iOO were present on the occasion. In tho Consolation Race Kismit was the winner, as no protest was entered by Loni'ly's owner. The starter (Mr J. Bayliss) is also deserving of credit fur tho m inner ho despatched the horses. Hn'teb'L'AlSMHxt. — The entertainment held in the Public Hall on race night was the most successful in. point of numbers that has been held here for some years pa-it, the hall being uncomfortably filled. Mrs Helps presided most efficiently at the piano, and also played tho overture in her usual finished manner. The following items were then programmed Song, "Old and Now," Mr E. >Yubin, was well sung and applauded ; song, "Such is Life," Miss Waimvright, was sweetly sung, and the demand for an encore unanimous, but declined ; song, " Little Sunshine," Miss B. Si?e, was nicely rendered ; song, "When Noah Hutu; Out in Ark," Air Geo. Miles, fetches! the audience completely, and additional verses wero given to an undeniable ! encore; song, "Song That Reached My Heart," by Miss Allan, was given in her best style, and was long and heartily applauded. Song (in character), Mary's Gone With a Coon," Mr Bayliss, suited tho taste of those present to a T, and was of oourse encored. Duet, by Mrs Grierson' aod Mhs Finch, "Pilot Brave," was n 'i veil in excellent style, their voices blending most harmoniously. Piano duet, "Burlesque Quadrilles," by Misses Sage, an excellent performance. This concluded the first part of the programme. After the usual interval tho second part commenced with the overturn, " Operatic Selections," piano, Mrs Helps; '■Madolme," Mr George Miles ; song, " Not Forgotten," Mrs Grierson ; tableaux, "Jockey to the Fair," in four parts. This was an excellent series of grouping throughout, tho characters all sustaining their parts most admirably, and the dresses were in excellent taste and most suitable to the piece. It was most enthusiastically appl aided at its conclusion. Song, "Only to See Her Face Again," bv Mr John Bayliss, was well received. A song by Miis Oas&iuy was sans by that young lady with great taste and expression. Impersonations by Mr C. Johnstone concluded. the evening's entertainment. The various characters placed before the audience were well sustained and caused roars of laughter, those of the masher and the old gentleman's after dinner speech being particularly good. Seats were thou removed and dancing commenced in as warm an atmosphere the most ardent of tcpsiehorians could desire, the room being as well filled as possible to revolve in. Quit: a number of the dancers were halfcastes who could well hold their own with the pattellas in the light fauta-tic. Not till daylight well appeared did tho party break UJ).
