TE AROHA.

«. Annual School Fetk.— On Monday evenins; at the schonl-room, members of the School Committee, numbering four, were met by a uhalanx of equal numbers of the fair sex, for the purpo3o of making arrangements to pr.ivide ways and means towards defraying the expenses of the annual popular school treat which is to take place here on New Years' Day. Mr James Lavery was voted to the chair. For the purpose of identifying these young ladies who are about to wage friendly warfare on the pockets of tho public, it is but right in point of history as well that their names should be recorded. These are: Misses Maingay, Pavitt (2), and Johnston, (with power to arid to their number), but no dmibt the winning ways of this quartette will be sufficient to raise the requisite amount. Having received their instructions the ladies retired, after which a special meeting of the committee took place. A. communicatioji from the Board of Education re tenders'fur painting the school was received, showing tho following tenders :— L'tvegrove, £IG 17s Gd (accsptsd); Gao«s, £17 ISs : Blackil, £l'Jds ; Hood, £20 3s 8d ; Shepherd. £23 9s. A resolution to call for tenders for necessary repairs to the teacher'* residence was carried. Goon Find.—Whilst Peter Coglan of Waiorongamai was prospecting the other day on the west side of the ' Buck' reef he cams across some loo=e stuff, probably wurthed down from the reef. The stone was covered over with a growth of moss, and after scraping this away he brought some of the stuff down, and from a handful of it af'er being washed, he could discern from 1C to 20 colours of gold in it. Two pieces of the stone he has pounded up himself and he was quite satisfied with the prospect. An assay of the stone will be made this week at the works of the Te Aroha Silver and Gold Mining Company. A Woud m Season.—With the exception of the flax hands, work generally in the district has already been suspended in view of the Christmas holidays. The men who have been shearintr, etc. at the Agricultural Company's VVorks, and those employed by the Ferguson Syndicate at Waiorongamai have been knocked off for the holidays. On the other hand, the employees in the different flax mills nre working from 10 to 14 hours per day. Although a small allowance is made for overtime, these hours appear to be somewhat hard on the boys and men, but it is just possiblo that, some of the employers, who at presont are cqjuing a profit of from SlO to i'l2 on each ton of Hax they turn out, will, in the fullness of their hearts, act in a magnanimous way, by giving each man and boy a substantial Christmas allowance. Death of Mrs Dobson.— The announcement that this lady, wife of Mr J. A. Dobion, one of our most respected townsmen, bad passed away early on Tuesday mornin?, produced quite a gloom over the place. The deceased lady had been ailing for some years, and under medical treatment for different complaints, but her demise ivas somewhat unexpected. Mrs Dobson leaves three young children, and although not yet of an age to fully comprehend their oss, much sympathy is felt for them, and tor Air Dobson in their bereavement. The -emains were conveyed by train to Auck iand on Wednesday morning, and were followed to the railway station from Mr Dobsoti's residence by many members of the Masonic fraternity and the general public.
